The Animal Rescue Unit, ARU for short, provides a technical rescue service for trapped animals. It is a volunteer organisation run in conjunction with the Wellington SPCA.(Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand.
The ARU specialises in high angle rescue with an emphasis on the welfare of the trapped animal.
The situations that we train for are animals stuck on cliffs, in trees, in restricted spaces (like under a house or in the seismic gap between office buildings), or even in holes in the ground. We also have a role to play in any Civil Defence emergencies that might occur.
