Imagine a world in which a single runtime application dynamically publishes your content and services to the mobile, desktop and TV screens. In this eComm 2009 presentation Anup Murarka, Director of Technical Marketing for Mobile and Devices at Adobe, tells developers this dream is becoming a reality, thanks to the efforts of The Open Screen Project - an industry-wide initiative led by Adobe.
The number of devices with network capabilities has exploded in recent years, as has the number of development applications needed to create content and services for these screens. The challenge for developers has been to create a seamless experience across the different screens whilst still respecting the 'soul' of each individual device.
As Murarka explains in his presentation, The Open Screen Project hopes to address this by developing a consistent runtime application that developers can then use to deliver their own applications and services across multiple network devices. He gives an overview of the project including its supporters, progress and timelines, and announces the creation of a Market Development Fund to foster application and service development using the new runtime applications.
Murarka also discusses some of the changes Adobe has made, both within the company and to its products, such as removing the license restrictions on the swf, flv and f4v file formats, in an effort to show Adobe's commitment to the Open Source Movement.
