The global video industry is a huge and growing industry, although currently it is hampered by scarcity. There are only so many theatres, channels and spaces at the video store, so there is only room for so much content. However, the internet is a tool that is starting to completely transform the distribution of multimedia content, and it's more than just delivering video over IP.
At the 2005 Syndicate conference, Jeremy Allaire, founder of Brightcove, explains how using the internet can completely revolutionize the distribution of video and multimedia products. Currently, content producers and consumers have many layers between them - distributors, channels and studios - and there is virtually no way for producers and consumers to interact directly. Even the bottom line, the dollars to the producers, flows through these layers before producers are compensated.
On the other hand, using the internet as a distribution model offers abundance and direct relationships between users and producers. Users can find content in new and more relevant ways, producers can work directly with advertisers and have instant global reach for their content.
Jeremy Allaire founded Brightcove in early 2004 with a vision for the transformation of television with the Internet. As Chairman and President of Brightcove, Jeremy leads the company's technology, marketing and business development strategy.
Prior to founding Brightcove, Jeremy worked as a technologist and entrepreneur-in-residence for Cambridge, MA-based venture capital firm General Catalyst, where he worked on companies and investments in broadband media, mobile content, e-commerce software and digital identity. Before General Catalyst, Jeremy was Chief Technology Officer of Macromedia, where he helped define and launch the Macromedia MX platform for Rich Internet Applications.
