Asterisk has wide support for a wide array of technologies and is much more flexible than normal telephony systems. People are using as a platform to build different solutions such as security and monitoring systems as well as conferencing systems. Brian Capouch is an assistant professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana. Saint Joseph's was the first "small entity" in the world with an always-on Internet connection, beginning in 1988. He owns and operates a small wireless ISP that covers approximately 500 square miles in Northern Indiana. His current work involves using VoIP to provide telephony services to his wireless customers, and he is writing a book about Asterisk, the Open Source Telephony Server. He is also involved in the restoration of a half-block of buildings constructed in the mid-1800s in Medaryville, Indiana.
