We have never been more excited to headline a tour. It’s an honor to be touring with such great bands and we know you are going to love all of them. We have the perfect line-up for you to mosh to, sing along to, bounce to and bang your fucking head to. We’re back and we’re better than ever. See you all very soon.”

Motörhead Cuts Wacken Open Air Set Short Due To Lemmy’s Health Problems

Uh-Oh, Updates

Lemmy at Wacken 2013

Lemmy at Wacken 2013

With Lemmy Kilmister on the mend following his recent health scare, fans were looking forward to Motörhead’s show at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany today. However, it appears that Lemmy’s condition still may not be at 100%, as the band cut their festival set short.

Motörhead reportedly spent less than 30 minutes onstage (45 minutes less than scheduled) at the Wacken Open Air festival today, with awkward long pauses in-between the six songs they played. According to people in attendance, Lemmy did not look or sound well and struggled to gather strength to perform. Guitarist Phil Campbell even played a guitar solo earlier than usual to cover for the frontman, which upon its conclusion was met with “eerie silence.” After they played their final song, co-founder Thomas Jensen came out and announced to the audience that the concert was over, supposedly admitting that even he didn’t know what to do or say about the situation.

Needless to say, this is pretty worrisome to hear. Whether or not this means Lemmy returned to the stage too soon, we simply hope he gets better and takes a little more time to rest up.

I, The Breather Drummer Leaves Band

Posted by Ben DiCostanzo on Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 2:58 pm

Metal Musical Chairs

morganwrightI, The Breather drummer Morgan Wright has decided to part ways with the band after five years. He posted the following lengthy statement on his Facebook page earlier:

“For the past 5 years I’ve dedicated my time and energy into something I have loved so much. I pursued every opportunity with passion and never once took any one of them for granted. I started ITB in my basement with my best friend at the time Justin Huffman & Shawn Spann… Just the three of us jamming out & making music that we loved. It later evolved into what you know today as ” I the Breather.” ITB has been the best thing I have ever been a part of. It’s been a roller coaster ride, an unending thrill ride. Every member past and present; looking past all the hard times we faced I think of the good times we embraced together. As I write this letter of me stepping down from my current position as drummer of ITB. I thank you.

As for our fans, I have been truly spoiled and blessed to be so fortunate to have people who care about everything I/we did. It’s a humbling thing to know that something I started as an outlet to have fun… Turned into an inspiration to some. All the good times and crazy concerts I’ve shared with you I can hold onto that for the rest of my life.

There comes a time when you get burnt out doing something. You try and try to stay motivated and make things happen, but it doesn’t quite go according to plan. The reason behind me stepping down is: “I’m” simply burnt out. This band has created me to look at playing the drums as a task and an unwanted duty that I sometimes would dread to have to do. Something I love so dearly has now become so hard for me to sit down and feel motivated to do. It’s as simple as that. I shouldn’t feel burnt out about playing drums for thousands of kids and doing what I love. It shouldn’t be that way. Me leaving has nothing to do with the friendship & brotherhood I have with the members of this band. They’re the definition of brothers & have supported me in every way possible.

When God grants you with a gift he wants you to share it with the world. The world needs to know what you know! I believe I’ve done that with my drumming through ITB all over the world… I’m honored for getting the opportunity to do so. Thanks to EVERYONE at Sumerian records for believing and being so amazing to work with (Nick, Matt, Shawn, Ash, George, Dan, Mike, Randy)

Thanks to everyone in ITB past & present(Justin, Conor, Shawn, Chase, Jered,Armand)

My last show will be Sunday August 4th Intensity Music Festival See you all there!

We had a fun ride!

- Morgan Wright”

This is why the internet was invented: presenting Bass Dogs

Posted by Bram Teitelman on Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Metal Memes

napalm death shane embury dogSome of the best ways to waste time on the internet is by following random Tumblr accounts. We’ve all seen Bargain Bin Blasphemy, in which old vinyl gets a metal makeover. It’s a distant cousin of Album Tacos, which is kind of self-explanatory. Now we can add Bass Dogs to the mix. Operating under the principle that “people who play bass with their fingers look like they’re tickling hairy dogs,” the relatively new site features Rush’s Geddy Lee, Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris, Napalm Death’s Shane Embury, and 66.6%s of Metallica’s bassists picking on pups. This is clearly the best thing dog-related thing that that’s ever happened, at least until the next ridiculous Tumblr idea comes along.  Check out a few more below:  Read more »

Dave Mustaine Speaks about Jeff Hanneman, Past Addictions

Posted by Ben DiCostanzo on Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 1:20 pm

Interviews

Dave_Mustaine_e_dragut_dar_dificil (1)Outspoken Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine recently conducted an interview with Denver Westwood, in which he talks about his drug related past, religious beliefs, and the unfortunate passing of Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman.

One the subject of God and religion, Mustaine compares it to being in AA.

“Honestly, to boil it down, religion, it sucks. For me it’s really all about having a personal relationship with God, and people don’t want to do that because they don’t want to be held accountable. It’s kind of like when you’re in AA: You have a sponsor and the sponsor helps you get through the day without drinking. I needed that accountability to help me get off heroin.”

The drug-related answer brought on the question of Mustaine ever trying to get Jeff Hanneman out of his addiction with alcohol. To which Mustaine replied:

“Unfortunately, Jeff and I were never really close. We toured together a lot over the years, but our two camps were pretty separate. The bands were kind of acquaintances in the beginning, though that was more so me and Kerry [King]. Jeff was always a little more aloof. It would just be kind of, “Hey man, what’s up?” when we saw each other.

Also, for the greater period of the time I knew him, I was starting to go the route of getting away from my addictions, and I was unable to hang around with people who were partying. And people know about Jeff’s drinking, and that’s unfortunately what led to his death. It was liver failure.

And you know, getting bitten by a spider, that’s just random. But I think because Jeff was kind of unaware of what was going on and wore long sleeves all the time, no one else really saw his arm, and so no one said, “Dude, you’ve got a f*cking problem going on here.”

The sad thing is, we’ve lost a good guy and a mighty guitar player. But now what we need to ask is: What can be learned from this? How can we honor Jeff’s life? And how can we use his unfortunate passing to help young people not go the same route? So the whole thing saddens me, but I also can’t act like we were best friends, because we weren’t. It was a similar thing with Dimebag Darrell, where it seemed like everybody jumped on his bandwagon after his death. I don’t want to do that.”

Mustaine is currently finishing up the last two weeks of Gigantour with Megadeth, alongside Black Label Society, Newsted, and Device.

Joey Jordison project Scar the Martyr debuts first track “Blood Host”

Posted by Tiffany Bentley on Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 11:56 am

New Music

scar the martyrThe first track release off the upcoming Scar the Martyr album is one drummer/bassist Joey Jordison. The song, “Blood Host,” was released to the public today via Revolver.

For the first single to be one that Jordison penned seems less than coincidental, since the side project was spawned by the Slipknot drummer, who announced in June he had recruited members Henry Derek on vocals,  Jed Simon (Strapping Young Lad) and Kris Norris (Darkest Hour) on guitars and Chris Vrenna of Nine Inch Nails on keyboards, for the band. While Slipknot members like to get around with side projects, Jordison is using this adventure to expand his musicianship. Not only is he playing drums and bass, but is also dabbling in rhythm guitar on select album tracks. Whether or not that means the track will sound completely different or completely similar to Slipknot, we will let you decide. We are leaning towards the latter.

Scar the Martyr’s  self-titled debut album is set to launch October 1 on Roadrunner Records and the band will join Danzig August 9th for their upcoming tour. Check out the song below: Read more »

John 5 On Rob Zombie’s First Ever Live DVD, Working With David Lee Roth And Rod Stewart

Posted by Zach Shaw on Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 10:59 am

Interviews

rob-zombie-17It’s been a little over a year since we last spoke to John 5. Yet somehow he hasn’t slowed down at all. He’s busy enough keeping up with Rob Zombie, releasing the album Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor and co-headlining Mayhem Fest. Yet somehow he finds the time to collaborate with some of music’s biggest names AND to work on a new solo album. And to top it all off, he’s also helping Zombie do a first: release a live DVD.

John 5 took a moment to brief and talk with us before taking the stage at Mayhem Fest’s stop in Camden, NJ. During our chat, the guitarist extraordinaire gave more insight behind Zombie’s first ever live DVD, the status with the jukebox musical he’s been working on with David Lee Roth, and how in the hell he came to write a song with Rod Stewart. Emperor To Reunite At Wacken Open Air 2014

Posted by Zach Shaw on Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 9:53 am

Festivals, We're Getting The Band Back Together

emperorThe Wacken Open Air festival literally just kicked off today. Yet we already know one major addition to next year’s lineup: Emperor.

Ihsahn and Samoth took part of a press conference earlier today at the German metal festival to announce that the legendary black metal group would be reuniting at next year’s edition (taking place July 31-August 2, 2014). The two also confirmed during the press conference that the band will be performing a number of shows next year, though gave no indication as to what extent. Though they officially disbanded shortly after releasing Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise in 2001, the Wacken performance will mark Emperor’s first show since 2007 (when they played a handful of reunion shows).

Given how busy Ihsahn has been with his own solo work (and how resistant he seemed to a reunion), Emperor’s return comes as a nice surprise. The reunion is also a major grab for Wacken, which celebrates its 25th anniversary next year. Ihsahn has another solo album coming out later this year, his third in four years.

Philip Anselmo makes child’s dream come true at tour kickoff

good causes

anselmoThe Philip H. Anselmo “Technicians of Distortion” tour isn’t even two days old yet, and it’s already becoming one for the ages. It started out with a surprise show the day before the tour kicked off. And last night, the first night of the tour, Anselmo helped make a child’s dream come true. During the Tulsa show, a young metal fan named Peyton came up onstage to play the Pantera classic “Walk” with Anselmo and his backing band, the Illegals. It was done via the Make-A-Wish foundation, an organization that grants wishes to children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. The kid has a solid sense of rhythm, and was able to hang with the band, while realizing a dream of his. Even Anselmo seemed overcome, stating via his Instagram account:

Making Peyton’s wish come true! He wanted to play “Walk”! He’s a really great player & an awesome kid….#makeawishfoundation

Check out the video below, and if you’re interested in seeing Anselmo (sans Peyton), here are the remaining dates of the tour. Read more »
