Saturday 9th November, Mumsnet Blogfest – I’ll hopefully have tackled my innate fear of public speaking through ‘party conference season’ and be able to throw together some sentences for assembled folk…
And if I’m rubbish, then i’m sure Louise Mensch and Stella Creasy are worth listening to.

my boss says “pretend they are not there” – i blush at the slightest thing, so public speaking has always been my worst nightmare. the thought of blushing makes me bluish and then its just a big circle of blush. i need glasses for long distance now so maybe if i wait till im completly blind long distance then i can pretend no one is there…
You were great on the breakfast tv clips I sae. Can you treat this the same – i.e. a discussion with a couple of people – a conversation – try to forget you are being watched!
Oh, Louise Mensch. I’m very interested in how you would get on – personally I cannot stand her politics. Stand your ground!
I was going to say the same. I cant stand anything she says, including her rubbish so called feminism.
Tell Stella Creasy I’m a massive fan of her work on payday lenders and debt! I trained as a teacher and speaking in front of pesky teenagers definitely cured my fear of public speaking. I don’t know what to suggest except that with time it gets easier – and I’m sure all your blog readers will be rooting for you. Try and remember that you’ve been invited because of what you have already achieved and people want you to do well! They won’t be there to pick holes. Iain
Also even well-known public figures like SC and LM are just flesh-and-blood like us. They might even give you some tips!
Remember that people need to hear what you have to say and it’ll be a doddle.
Morning! You’ll be fab up there with your speech, I’m sure you’ll blow everyone’s socks off. I’ve helped people in the past with speeches/presentations etc…drama/teaching background means I’m ok with big audiences! One thing I tell everyone I help is that what you are saying is worth listening to and very important so don’t be afraid of speaking in front of people. They are there because they want to know what you think.
Have a great day and a good weekend.

Stella Creasey is good – Louise Mensch not so much with the good.
Best of luck Jack, sure you’ll be fine.
You’re an absolute koukla, and you will do just fine.
In the worst case, if something goes wrong, you seem like the type who would learn quickly from the situation and never forget. And learning is good, too.
I am so haaaappy to find this!!!! I was in a similar situation years ago, unployed with a child, then I ‘d decided to start raise my own organic food in my backyard… today I own a lil farm with my family, no much money, but healthy food always there =D
Do you think would-be-bloggers can go to this Jack? I’m keen to start and think this event would give me some good tips (if I can avoid being starstruck that is!)
I thought battlefield first aid while in Iraq. It was not the easiest environment to teach in. The audience where often restless and free with colourful comments.
The best angle to use when public speaking is to remind yourself that you have some information and knowledge that you know, and that your audience want! You are not talking to them, You are teaching them.
like any good teacher, you must be inspiring. If you know the subject enough, you already have the necessary skills to inspire a room full of people. ‘Ducendo exemplum’ leading by example.
enjoy your day jack
oops.. thought should have been ‘taught’ LoL
