Follow our guide and brighten up with white eyeliner

This twist on the classic Eighties white eyeliner brightens and widen eyes for a youthful look.

Adding a slick of black eyeliner keeps it modern.

STEP ONE

With a flat brush, apply a light, shimmery shadow such as Bobbi Brown Sparkle (£20, Debenhams) over the eyelid.

STEP TWO

Draw a thick line above your upper lashes using a white eyeliner such as this from MAC (£14, maccosmetics.co.uk).

Draw thick white eye liner (MAC) across upper lid.

STEP THREE

Next, take a black liquid eyeliner and apply a slightly thinner line on top. Make sure you can still see the white eyeliner above it.

STEP FOUR

Using a mascara such as Lancome Hypnose (£22, Boots), open up your eyes by applying a coat to both your top and bottom lashes.

STEP FIVE

Combine your eye make-up with light blusher and a coat of lip gloss and this easy-to-do look is ready to go.

I thought white eyeliner was meant to be used inside the eyeline, on the pink bit, so giving the illusion of bigger, brighter eye whites. I mean, I tried it but I looked unwell, rather than brighter. But at least in principle it made sense, even if it looked terrible in reality.

You're supposed to put it above your lower lashes on the upper side of the lower lid. This is what makes the eye look bigger. I never saw it used like this in the 80s. Who was paid to write this rubbish?!
