Neighbours turns 28
18 Mar 2013

Today Neighbours marks its 28th anniversary, an unprecedented milestone in Australian drama, with the wedding of the year, a million dollar makeover and the announcement of the five Australian finalists vying to sing the show’s new theme song.

The nuptials of Ramsay Street’s favourite son Toadie Rebecchi (played by Ryan Moloney) and his bride-to-be Sonya Mitchell (played by Eve Morey) is the feature of Neighbour’s anniversary week, which kicks off with the show’s 6601st episode.

Creators of the Logie Award winning production FremantleMedia Australia filmed sequences of the wedding at its recently upgraded Melbourne studios.

FMA have injected over a million dollars to construct three purpose built outdoor sets boasting pools, spas, entertainment areas and the rear façade of three of the show’s world famous Ramsay Street residences – number 22, 26 and 32, as well as a facelift to world renowed Harold’s café. Pictures of the new outdoor sets can be seen below.

“A big part of Neighbours global appeal is its celebration of the Aussie lifestyle and the new outdoor sets will enhance this and provide a sensational backdrop to our stories moving forward,” said FremantleMedia CEO Asia Pacific Ian Hogg.

The top five Australian finalists selected to take on five UK finalists in the Neighbours “Ashes” style competition will be featured each night next week (commencing Monday, March 18) on Channel Eleven during the opening titles. Viewers will be able to vote from Friday (March 22) evening for an Australian entrant to take on an overall UK representative.

Monday – Gavin Chan, Victoria
Tuesday – Stephanie Angelini, Victoria
Wednesday – Ben Bennett, NSW
Thursday – Lucie Mulov, Victoria
Friday – Chris Ninni, NSW

The overall winner’s vocals will be heard on episodes of Neighbours around the world from April this year.

Neighbours debuted on-air in Australia 1985 and was quickly picked up around the world over the following two years. It has employed an estimated 25,000 cast, production crew and writers over nearly three decades and for many of these, it launched their industry careers.
