wouldn’t the fuji x100 overlap with your rx100?
the rx100 is a beast, i’ve been recommending it all day long to anyone who asks abut cameras – unless they have a specific want to go dslr or be ultra creative. (btw.. I don’t own a rx100 though, i run a rx1 as my day to day)
x100 is perfect if you don’t already have a camera or you have a aps-c/ff dslr system.
x100 is probably not a good idea you already have an aps-c dslr and an rx100 however.

buy a second hand Canon 5D Classic (Mark1) and a 50mm f1.8 lens.. should be $500-600 for the camera and less than $100 for the lens – btw, the lens is freaking amazing for the price, don’t diss it.
I’m buying a used Canon 5D this weekend as an upgrade to my 7 year old Canon 350D.. but it doesn’t mean retirement, that thing is still going strong and giving me some great shots.
Moral.. if you really want to test out creatively using DSLR, don’e be afraid to pick out older generation models at low prices.

buy a Sony RX100.
if you really want to be able to change lenses then the there is no difference between the 5n or f3. pick the one which fits your hand better and is cheaper.
but for me.. if a toss up between the 5n, f3 and rx100.. i’d go rx100

Number 4 is a really good idea. I had the same offer from a photographer at a family member’s wedding. Great opportunity to see the whole process and learn some tricks of the trade, however I had to turn the offer down as:
a. I was already in full time employment, hence no time; and
b. as it was unpaid, i couldn’t afford the plane fares to exotic destinations – the majority of his work is either in romantic locales in asia or central europe!
At uni, you may not have the money but you may definitely have the time (unless you are doing an engineering degree that is!)

I apologise but you are wrong.
As sensor size increases, the depth of field will decrease for a given aperture (when filling the frame with a subject of the same size and distance). This is because larger sensors require one to get closer to their subject, or to use a longer focal length in order to fill the frame with that subject. This means that one has to use progressively smaller aperture sizes in order to maintain the same depth of field on larger sensors. The following calculator predicts the required aperture and focal length in order to achieve the same depth of field (while maintaining perspective).
As an example calculation, if one wanted to reproduce the same perspective and depth of field on a full frame sensor as that attained using a 10 mm lens at f/11 on a camera with a 1.6X crop factor, one would need to use a 16 mm lens and an aperture of roughly f/18. Alternatively, if one used a 50 mm f/1.4 lens on a full frame sensor, this would produce a depth of field so shallow it would require an aperture of 0.9 on a camera with a 1.6X crop factor — not possible with consumer lenses!

very true and I can’t dispute what you say.
however I do firmly believe no beginner needs a 5d mk3 and a bunch of L lenses.. not until they have experimented a bit.
My first experience with cameras was in the late 90’s with a contax slr and prime working off b&w film at my schools dark room. It teaches you a lot about the basics.. something beginners lose when they have uber equipment. i won’t buy a 5d mk3 but I will buy a 5d mk1 asthere’s so much I have yet to learn, a mk1 will suit me fine, and I firmly believe a large majority of other people are also int he same boat.

All comments of course as to provide critique but don’t be offended as my “stylistic bias” is different from yours but here goes..
Not too sure I like this one, sorry!
The non-level framing doesn’t do it for me and not sure whether my eye wants to focus on the white car in the background or the HSBC wing or the alloys. My mind is telling me to focus on the wheel (is that the intentional focus point?) but my instincts want my eye to focus on the background car – the eye will generally want to focus on the lightest/brightest areas.

Good shot, I like it, photo has that smooshy, dreamy, pre-digital feel to it. :)

Framing, slight adjustment to vertical and rotation to square up the frame.
Probably can make the photo “pop” a bit by giving more contrast.
Otherwise solid attempt!

don’t forget the geometries of Full Frame vs Crop using the same equivalent lens will show different depths of field (summary, cropped = less).
