The Royals have signed veteran slugger Carlos Pena to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Omaha, MLB.com's Dick Kaegel reports. Pena was released by the Astros on July 31.

The 35-year-old first baseman is batting .209/.324/.350 this season. Pena was, however, quite productive as recently as 2011, when he was a member of the Cubs. For his career, Pena has to his credit 285 home runs and 762 unintentional walks. Pena was an All-Star in 2009 and finished in the top 10 of the AL-MVP balloting in 2007 and 2008.

Royals GM Dayton Moore says Pena is being viewed as a potential left-handed bat off the bench for the stretch drive.
