Opera Mini 6.1 launched today for Java, Blackberry, Android and S60!

, , , , , , , ,

After the successful launch of Opera Mini 6, we went back to the drawing board for Opera Mini 6.1. Our goal was simple, listen to our users, gather feedback, and implement the most requested features.

So what's new?

Opera Mini 6.1 introduces several exciting new features that will make browsing from a mobile phone easier than ever before. Leading the list of new features is support for Google AutoComplete, domain auto-suggest, and greatly improved text selection.

In addition to all the new features, we have also improved stability and device support in Opera Mini 6.1.

Download Opera Min 6.1 direct to your Java, Blackberry, Android or S60 device from m.opera.com, or get it in the Android Market.

After downloading, head over to our Opera Mini forum to discuss.

New in Opera Mini 6.1

  • Added support for Google AutoComplete and Yandex Suggestions
  • Added ability to search directly from the address bar
  • Added intelligent domain suggest which suggests your most used domain endings
  • Added support for country domain auto-complete such as .ru or .id
  • Improved text selection

Java specific change log

  • Improved memory handling on Sony Ericsson devices
  • Improved text input for devices using Rolltech Nemomp JVM
  • Improved device detection. Samsung GT-B5722, GT-C3510, SDH-D980 and GT-B3410 should now get the correct touch UI
  • Ring tones can be saved to "tones" download folder
  • General bug fixes and improvements

Blackberry specific change log

  • Fixed minor graphical glitches when opening text fields
  • More robust virtual keyboard handling
  • General bug fixes and improvements

Android specific change log

  • Support for more font faces and sizes.
  • Correct rendering of RTL strings in the UI.
  • Fixed some device detection issues so that they get correct skin.
  • Title is now included when sharing a URL.
  • General bug fixes and improvements.

S60 specific change log

  • Adjusted text size on Nokia E6
  • Made it possible to start Opera Mini on Sony Ericsson Vivaz when installed on external storage
  • Improved font rendering for Chinese fonts
  • Smaller installation size
  • General bug fixes and improvements

Known issues:

  • Saved pages from previous clients can not be used with 6.1.
  • On BlackBerry: search suggestions are only available if you have a socket connection (ie. if you are using WiFi or have entered APN settings for your device).
  • On some S60 devices: it can take some time before search suggestions appears when there is no active connection to the server.

Check out our shaky hands down video introduction:

We also launched Opera Mobile 11.1 today
Opera Mobile is a full browser with client-side support for JavaScript, HTML5, Flash (Android only) and more. In Opera Mini, the browser engine is running on Opera's servers. Web pages are transcoded and compressed up to 90% before being downloaded to the device, making Opera Mini lightning fast and also much cheaper if you are paying per megabyte.

What exactly was improved about text selection?

Also, still unable to copy URLs AS links (Nokia E52).
Neither from address bar nor from the pages.
It's totally IMPOSSIBLE to copy the links on Opera Mini for Symbian.
Not very good for any browser, eh?
Fix it already please. It's not that hard.

Your comment is what's not very good. In fact, it's quite obnoxious.

Can't you just select the link and copy it as you would copy normal text?

Does Nokia have some kind of weird system where links have to be copied as links? If so, Nokia sucks.

Mmitat Thursday, June 30, 2011 2:06:31 PM

Opera Mini also has done a great job.

Yes, I can copy it but it will copy just the text, not the link, so it doesn't work.

When I try to copy link from the address bar, it doesn't allow to select the "http" part, so it's just the plain text again, not the link.

Nokia sucks? Yep, maybe. But the link copy feature worked just fine untill opera 5, so it's not the Nokia's fault in this very case.

And why you even bother to reply to my post, if you have no idea what I'm talking about?

Don't be so qlueless next time and don't flood when you can not help people.

Thank you.

Please don't reply with your useless posts. I'm understanding that you're Opera's fan and it's ok.

I'm asking for some of the Opera representatives to help me with the issue.
That's it.

Just checked the Java version of OM6 and found the "copy link from address bar" feature works fine there.

Fix it for Symbian asap, please.

I can't see google suggestion on 6.1 for java. Is suggesion available on java ?

Mini 6.1 S60 is unstable and frequently *crashes* (and exits) on my Nokia E72 (1.25 yrs old firmware, but other apps don't crash usually.)

Haven't tried 6.1 J2ME (using 6.0 J2ME still). So I'll see later. But generally J2ME was so far more reliable for me than native S60 Mini.

I have been using opera mini and mobile for quite a long time. Its awesome and undoubtly the best browser around. However I would like to add a suggestion. The downloads cant be resumed once the browser has closed, and this is the only reason I am still keeping UC Browser on my phone[I know it sucks but I have no option}. If you could just add this feature to mini and mobile I would be very greatful.
Hope you give a look to the matter. :]
Thank u!

waiting for flash supported opera mini

SaudkhanSaudktk Saturday, July 2, 2011 7:53:47 AM

downloding in OM6.1 symbian is not resumable,if we downlod something and pause it for some reason,we can'nt continue it if we close OM6.1,thus the file under downloding is totally lost.
Plz add downlod resumable feature and multi-downloding as soon as possible.
Plz opera team plz...I need these 2 features badly.

Godwin Endi Oendi007 Saturday, July 2, 2011 9:54:03 AM

First, why does Opera Mini 6 or 6.1 not import your feeds from older versions after you've synchronised Knowing you'll lose your feeds is a disincentive for moving over.

And like someone raised earlier, why can't I copy links as 'links', and not text?

Finally, why do my downloading migrate to my generic browser after a couple of downloads (doesn't happen with images though)?

Kottaram.rameshKottaram1969 Saturday, July 2, 2011 11:14:23 AM

I like opera mini very much, every thing is fine but downloading resume is not available. We need a Indic version of opera mini as Bolt indic version. Pls if you know any opera mini suported indian languages, pls post. Thank you

I have a problem with Opera Mini 6.1 on Froyo, the problem is Opera mini 6.1 seems not support Unicode fonts very well, I get the ugly square characters when I go to any Vietnamese websites, and can't read at all. Please re-check supporting for Unicode and Vietnamese language. I never have this issue with previous version.

not sure on opera mobile 11, I'll try it now.

my phone spec: Moto Milestone XT720 dexter Froyo 2.2.1 KhalV4

edit: Opera Mobile 11 displays the unicode font well, as I've just checked on tuoitre.vn

so, the problem is with opera mini, not because my phone's font though.

Opera Mini has no Flash Player. Mini passes YouTube videos to your phone's media player to play. If your media player has issues, try upgrading your phone's firmware or look for another media player for your phone. Or maybe get another phone and hope it has a better media player in it.

Opera Mini team doesn't respond to everything. Especially if the requests/questions are already answered in old posts on the Opera Mini forum.

(Hint: Go on the Opera Mini forum and use the My Opera forum search engine. wink )
