Gotham Laboratories will be at World Maker Faire next month to show off MapperBot, a drone that demonstrates mapping an asteroid with a plenoptic camera, which they have mounted on a quadcopter which will circumnavigate a 2-3 meter asteroid mockup and map the surface details in real time.
Go Lab won the Best Hardware Prize at 2013′s NASA Space Apps Challenge with a nano satellite concept, and they’ll be showing it off along with the mapping drone. Looks really cool!
Reblogged this on pundit from another planet.
How are you going to map an asteroid with a quad copter? The last time I checked there is no atmosphere around asteroids.
I think the idea is to verify the mapping technique with the Lytro Cam, rather than suggest a quadcopter as the vehicle.
