Prime numbers research breakthrough
An new 'out of the blue' research paper about the "Twin Prime Conjecture" by Dr. Yitang Zhang of the University of New Hampshire and published in the journal Annals of Mathematics, has used techniques developed by CMS University professor John Friedlander and colleagues at Rutgers and the Institute for Advanced Study. Nilesh Bansal, a DCS PhD candidate supervised by CMS professor of computer science, Nick Koudas, was honoured as the Technology Achiever of the Year, recognizing his extraordinary success as co-founder of Sysomos, an advanced social media monitoring and analytics platform.

Graduating CMS student receives 3 top UofT awards!
A CMS undergraduate student, Mengtian Bao, has been awarded the Governor General's Silver Medal, the John Black Aird Scholarship and the Rose Shinin Award for 2013. The Governor General's Silver Medal is awarded annually to undergraduate students with the highest academic standing upon graduation; only three such medals are awarded across the University of Toronto. The John Black Aird Scholarship is given to the top graduating student at the University of Toronto. The Rose Sheinin Award is given to the top female graduating student at the University of Toronto.
An exceptional student, Mengtian Bao is graduating from the Specialist Program in Mathematics, (Statistics Stream) in CMS. This coming fall, Mengtian plans to pursue graduate studies in the Mathematical Finance Program at Columbia University. Read more here.

CMS TA, Danny Cao wins Undergraduate Student TA award!
Recent past president of AMACSS and CMS TA, Danny Cao has been awarded the Undergraduate Student TA Award. The Teaching Awards Committee was extremely impressed by the depth and scope of Danny Cao's TA experience as an undergraduate student, and by the depth and scope of his nominating letters from both students and faculty. Danny consistently goes beyond what is expected of him as a TA, both with respect to his academic and administrative duties, and this is a quality that is clearly appreciated by those he teaches and works with. Congratulations Danny!

CMS professor of statistics, Ruslan Salakhutdinov has been named a Microsoft Research Faculty Fellow, an honour reserved for fewer than 60 promising computer science researchers since the program launched 8 years ago. Read about it here.

Balázs Szegedy, professor of Mathematics in CMS has has won the 2013 Paul Erdos Prize for Mathematics. Russ Salakhutdinov, professor of Statistics in CMS, has received the coveted Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship. Ryan Johnson, professor of Computer Science in CMS has received a 2013 IBM Faculty Award and finally, Eleonore Faber, a post-doc in Mathematics at CMS with Prof. Ragnar Buchweitz had appeared on list of the "Top 35 under 35 in Austria", complied by The Austrian Research Fund.
Balázs Szegedy wins the 2013 Coxeter-James Prize.
Balázs Szegedy, professor of mathematics in CMS has been awarded the 2013 Coxeter-James Prize in Mathematics. The Coxeter-James Prize is awarded each year by the Canadian Mathematical Society to recognize young mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions in mathematical research.

CMS is thrilled to announce that Bianca Schroeder, Russ Salakhutdinov, and Robert Young have all been awarded Sloan Research Fellowships in 2013. These highly competitive fellowships are given to young researchers in disciplines spanning the physical and social sciences "in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field."
