230 cases of wrong convictions in US

An inquiry in the US has revealed that corrupt officials in North Carolina have deliberately withheld or distorted evidence in over two hundred judicial cases.

A blistering report released this week by the State Bureau of Investigation's forensic lab has shown errors in 230 cases from 1987 to 2003.

This demonstration of unprofessional conduct has resulted in the execution and incarceration of innocent victims, as in Gregory Taylor's case.

Taylor was sentenced to life in 1993 for first degree murder, despite pleading guilty.

After 17 years in jail, his case was reviewed by the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission. The review of earlier forensic tests indicated that the substance found on Taylor's collar was not blood. He was found innocent and exonerated in 2010.

The analyst who had initially done the test said his bosses told him to write the report saying that the substance was blood.

This prompted a search for more cases in which defendants might have been robbed of justice.

The State Bureau of Investigation found over 200 cases where evidence favorable to defendants were withheld or distorted.

Of these 230 victims, 80 are still serving their sentences, four are on death row and three people have already been executed. Five people died while serving their sentence.

Although, the United States regards itself the forerunner of defending human rights, observers and activists believe the civil rights of American's are being breached on a large scale.
