The tension is increasing as the biggest names in tennis move towards the semi finals of the U.S. Open.

But the crowds at Flushing Meadow got some welcome comic relief on Thursday night in the form of actors Jason Bigggs and Rainn Wilson who played an exhibition match against Monica Seles and Chris Evert.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the game was of an unpredictable nature, with Biggs and Wilson using rather unconventional tactics.

They pleased the crowd with their zealous celebrations, with Biggs running laps around the court, and Wilson dropping to his knees in rapture after on particularly win at the net.

The duo also celebrated one shot with a comical chest bump, much to the delight of the crowd.

Both stars arrived on court dressed in matching tennis whites with green and black trim, combined with seventies style striped headbands, tight white shorts and knee-length white socks.

Unsurprisingly, Evert and Seles, who have a combined 27 Grand Slam titles between them, managed to defeat Wilson and Biggs, by three games to two.

The game was held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the WTA, and the achievement of equal prize money for men and women at the US Open along with the 1973 victory of Billie Jean King over Bobby Riggs.

There was even a smattering of celebrities in the crowd including an amused Sean Connery and Richard Branson.

Afterwards, Wilson seemed undeterred by the defeat, tweeting: 'The greatest night of tennis ever in all of recorded history.'

Despite the amateur status of her opponents, Evert seemed impressed by her opponents' prowess:

'So much fun last nite with Monica, Rainn,@JasonBiggs,' she tweeted. 'Jason- good playing and u r a big hit in our family!!!'

A day earlier, Wilson had seemed more interested in his fashion choices, tweeting: 'Me & @JasonBiggs will be playing Chris Evert & Monica Seles at the @USOPentomorrow,' he tweeted. 'My shorts will be soooo tight!'

Biggs was a little nervous at the prospect of the match, tweeting: 'Look who's on Ashe doubles tomorrow. Those poor actors,' he tweeted. '@ChrissieEvert.  No kidding. HELP.'

The American Pie star has largely been concentrating on television work since last year's fourth instalment in the teen franchise - American Reunion.

If you think that was a chest bump, you need to improve your knowledge of anatomy.

'My shorts will be soooo tight!'" >>>>>>>>>> Guys, please tell me that interpreting Rainn's shorts-being-tight tweet as being "more interested in his fashion choices" was just you being cheeky and not oblivious.

Sean Connery looks very tired.

Jason is a real unhappy leftist. His Twitter feeds are full of cursing at conservatives. I don't get the hatred. Why antagonize a large percentage of the movie going public. It think Monica looks great. Sadly, it looks like not too many showed up for the high jinks.

Oh man alive, Sean Connery is a legend. No need for age related comments - he's 83. He really is one of the greatest.
