Striker light: Brady reveals West Ham failed with last ditch bids for Ba, Lukaku and Bendtner

By Richard Arrowsmith

West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady has revealed that the club went on a transfer deadline day scramble to sign a striker.

Chelsea duo Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku, as well as Arsenal misfit Niklas Bendtner were all on the Hammers wanted list, but the club were unable to tie up deals for any of them.

Speaking in her column in the Sun, Brady said: 'At 8.55pm I am told Lukaku wants to rejoin West Brom and, no matter what we do, his decision is final.

'Then, with 10minutes to deadline, it's revealed he is joining Everton!'

Record signing Andy Carroll, who made last season's loan move to Upton Park permanent with a 15million transfer is still sidelined through injury, leaving Modibo Maiga as the only senior striker available at Upton Park.

A West Ham said in a statement: 'Despite the board and manager deciding to do their business early on in the window to avoid last-minute panic buys - resulting in the successful signings of Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Razvan Rat and Adrian - joint-chairman David Sullivan and manager Sam Allardyce did spend all night on Monday trying to sign one of three international strikers, but all opted for the lure of European football instead.

West Ham were also on the brink of resigning former striker Carlton Cole two months after he left the club before deciding the striker was not fit enough to earn a contract.

Cole is now training with their first team fitness coach Mathew Monte-Colombo in a bid to get a new contract.

And, after joining in with some self-deprecating jokes,  Cole today posted a picture of himself looking svelte with the caption: 'Fat what?

Next she will be claiming they were after Pele. No class. Never has had. Fell sorry for West Ham to have her and Gold. Ego maniacs.

The trouble with Brady is that she's just full of B.S. Any fool can make a phone call in the last few hours of the transfer window asking if X is available. It doesn't mean that you have made a serious attempt at signing X. She comes out with this flimflam to make her and the Dave's look better than they are. It's pure PR codswallop.
