Opera 17 Next
By Blazej Kazmierczakbkazmierczak. Friday, September 6, 2013 8:54:35 AM
Besides bugfixes, the highlight of things of this Opera 17 Next release:
- More settings and preferences, like startup handling options, manage search engines,
- Pinned tabs,
- DPI aware on Windows,
- Enhanced extensions APIs and possibility to hide extensions buttons.
We read all your bug reports and feedback (thanks a million for giving it to us). We've decided to postpone Quick Access Bar as it still needs some tweaking and bug fixing. Synchronization can't yet be turned on while we finalise the server-side support and add support for more data types in the browser.
Of course, you will find all the feature switches in opera:flags
Opera 18 Developer should be released very soon. Besides Quick Access Bar, Synchronization, you should soon see further work in the area of tabs handling improvements, better autofill, themes, addressbar improvements and many others.
Thanks in advance for your bug reports and comments. To save some of you a little trouble, there is no Linux release of Opera 17, but there will be Opera for Linux.

I was using the O16 Next and I'm on 17 Next now. I noticed since O16 that when I want to view an enlarged picture on GSMArena.com, it sometimes gives me an error of something like "image is too large to load" (paraphrasing). That doesn't happen on Firefox. However, it sometimes works, so I hope you can fix that.
Now for the more important comment: Can you please add a type of glow effect on pinned tabs when a new e-mail or message is received on Gmail and other e-mail websites? I have to constantly verify if I have a new e-mail since there's no color change when I do receive one.
I also suggest that you make the "Add" button on the Quick Access bar more faded out, such as a light grey since we won't be using it all the time. Also, it would be even better if you add drag and drop ability to add a new link to the Quick Access bar. That being said, that bar is working great for me, so far.
Thanks in advance and thanks for your hard work
Edit: Oh and, I'm always having trouble with off-road mode, it is not working correctly. It's either slower or gives me an error when loading a website.
Edit 2: Can you please give us the ability to close a pinned tab with middle click? And to reload any type of tab with a right click and clicking on a Reload or Refresh button?

In Chrome extension =
"chrome_url_overrides": {
"newtab": "newtab.html"
},
How can I override you? Because I can modify my version of a chrome extension ( https://github.com/heavensrevenge/speed-dial-chrome/ ) to make a graphical speed dial based bookmark manager.
Also how can I access your internal urls from an extension, for example:
opera://thumbnail/?size=800x600&pixel_ratio=1&make_persistent=0&update=1&url=http://distrowatch.com/ So I can use your built-in thumbnail creator if possible?

The problem is about split characters in RTL pages when dragging mouse pointer over them from right to left and returning.
See the movie linked below to find it out better: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/74629435/Opera%20bug%20-%20gap%20RTL%20chars-.rar
Test page:

All RTL pages are affected.

And I discovered when you install this into Opera, and access the extension page from the extension "options" button, and inside the extension you can use the big + sign to actually add a bookmark or even a Folder to the QAB using that add operation since it uses chrome.bookmark API (booyeah).
So I can just use their v1 "Bookmark manager" addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/bookmarks-manager/ Import bookmark functionality to populate the JSON Bookmarks file and manage it within this extension in a speed-dial like visual fashion.
I'm friggin tired of waiting for bookmarks! lol

The removal of context menus from items within Quick Access Bar folders does not seem to have been thought through. They are needed.

Sorry to say that, but this shortcut just doesn't work in this release, but it works well in latest Opera Developer 17.

It seems to be more stable, though I somehow managed to crash it once by closing a tab. (It's the same effect that first appeared in the last Dev build.)
I wonder why you didn't enable HiDPI by default. It really affects user's impression, and seems to be working well for quite some time already.
Another thing that may have an adverse effect on the impression is the slow start-up. 500 MB of opera.exe reads...please do something about it, while in the Next stage.
Switched to this Next as primary browser, but, I hope, not for long, as I'm looking forward for O18.

So devs, please make is happen!

Unless you are asking why bookmarks import is not available, and passwords/history/typed in pages are not imported, and in that case I suspect it's because a registry flag is set on the first instance of Next or Stable being installed, and it will not do the import function again.

Thanks for your hard work, I deeply appreciate your effort to make another "the best browser ever"
I have some problems using Opera Next (15, 16) which I want you to take a look at:
1. O15 and 16 (and possibly 17) freezes GUI and mouse after my notebook resumes from hibernation (Win7 64). I can enter a login/password, a session starts and what I see then is a black screen with a mouse pointer in center of it. HDD is being used hard. The On/Off switch is configured to put the notebook into hibernation so when I press it the screen goes completely black and that's it. Occasionally in 5-10 min notebook goes off. But most of time I have to press the switch for 4 sec. to turn notebook off. Then after boot everything is OK until the next hibernation. Sometimes everything goes well after hibernation, but most of time - as I described. My investigation showed that it could possibly be an old Chronium bug but since you make The New Opera using its engine... you know.
2. https://www.facebook.com - the page which loads just after the login dialog hangs. But if I manage to click any link on it while the page is being loaded, the browser shows corresponding page without a problem (O15, 16, 17). Going back to that page hangs it.
That's it for problems, now suggestions section
3. Enable lazy session loading - I like this option very much as it greatly reduces time needed for browser to get ready to interact with user. May be you should try to experiment with another option which will force Opera to load not the only tab, but all other tabs in a session as well: one by one (not in parallel) in background with reduced priority.

As for your first question: do you mean that Opera allocates too much memory and your system goes deep into memory swapping? Or else, how do you know it's Opera why the system is freezing? Looks like a usual system wake-up, when memory contents is read from hiberfil.sys.

As tabs are in developing stage think of Tree Style Tabs option (as in FF's extension). It is very handy mix of vertical tabs and smart tab grouping.

Don't bother. When Opera first brought out a Linux version, there were no good Linux browsers. Now we have several, and Opera's Chrome version is not good enough to bother with. At the current rate, it will be two-three years before it caches up with the features and feel of Opera 12 (which still is the greatest browser out there).

This started with in the last 2 versions of 16/17. I even removed all extensions and still no go.
Wix remote into my computer and we determined there is something going on with Opera since, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari are all fine, and, allow me to upload images to my account. This may not be a big issue on your end however I know several people using Opera with a Wix account, in addition Wix is going to put a note on there site that they do not support Opera! Help I love Opera!!!

First of all, I want to thank u for this awesome browser (it's still in development, most features we all loved from Opera 12 will return).
I use Opera cause of it's nice style (it's not like Chrome at all), unique speed dial and awesome performance & speed. However, I dont like the new "grey" inactive tab style in Opera Next 17. Maybe this change won't get into Opera 17.
It's just a small wish of mine
Would be awesome, if u might check the style again and think about it.
Ty!
