Kim Kardashian raised a few eyebrows when she posed pregnant for a high fashion shoot, photographed by Karl Lagerfeld, in which her face was smeared with jam.

Now, a newly released video from the CR Fashion Book shoot reveals what went on behind-the-scenes, including a cameo from the photographer himself, who chats to Kim's mom Kris on set.

The clip, which is set to dramatic, eerie opera music, shows the strange things the 32-year-old star, who was eight months pregnant at the time, went through to achieve the high-fashion shots.

In one shot, the reality star is fitted with a heavily embellished mask and crown, with dramatic jewels that cover her face entirely.

Another shows art director and Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci - a friend of Kanye West's - scrutinizing the photos with Mr Lagerfeld, who looks dashing in a pair of purple sunglasses.

The high-fashion images - which were taken on May 22 at Mr Lagerfeld's studio in Paris - received mixed reviews, with many skeptical of their avante-garde style.

But the magazine's editor Carine Roitfeld, who was also on hand at the shoot, was quick to jump to Kim's defense, saying she was 'beautiful to cover; she's beautiful inside.'

Another scene from the video reveals that Kim's mother Kris Jenner was present at the shoot, and she even tried on some fingerless black leather gloves to match Mr Lagerfeld's.

Some of the images show Kim bearing her belly completely, a pose that revealed what Ms Roitfield called a 'precious moment of Kim’s pregnancy that people haven't seen.'

In one such photo, she wears a black bra, pink boxing gloves and an unbuttoned black jacket, exposing her burgeoning baby bump.

It is not the first time Ms Roitfeld has focused on the idea of pregnancy in her biannual magazine.

For her inaugural issue, she featured a photograph of her daughter, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, while heavily pregnant.

'Pregnancy is something that I always love. It's about hope and the future and a new baby,' she said.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but is Lagerfeld just making fun of her, but calling it "art in fashion" because let's face it, he can get away with it!! I almost hear him in his mind saying "stupid Kardashian's, thinking smeared jam on her face is art!!! Ha ha ha!!!" I hope that is what he is doing and if so...touche' Mr. Lagerfeld, touche'......
