Opera 18 developer stream

, ,

As summer glides away to be replaced by the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, we're releasing the first iteration of Opera 18 in the Developer channel. If you don't notice that much differences from latest O17 dev stream, don't worry, this is our 18 "early bird", which will be refined and enhanced until features are frozen and it moves into the Next channel for bug fixing. There is more to come!

The initial new features are

  • Moving tabs between windows works on Mac and Windows
  • Installing themes is stabilized and enabled by default
  • Lots of bugs are fixed: full changelog
  • New engine version

As we make updates, you'll hopefully see enhancements to Quick Access Bar, tab handling, more settings, right click on edit fields to create searches, improvements on HDD usage, Synchronization (Opera Link) might be available in two weeks time, and others.

Note that features will be shipped when they're ready, so the list above may change if we encounter showstopper bugs or UI nasties, in which case they'll be rolled over to another release. For the same reason, it's possible that features may be removed before Opera 18 goes to the Next channel.

There is no Linux version of Opera available yet. As always, we'll be delighted to hear comments about bugs or UI.

Known bugs

  • DNA-11123 Popup sometimes fails to be displayed

Any news on DNA-10730? Still bugging me :/

Martin KadlecBS-Harou Wednesday, September 11, 2013 11:41:05 AM

When switching between tabs I often see content of another tab for a while (sometimes few ms, sometimes several seconds). This is happening in all O15+ builds. Can you do something about it?

G-Bojkokrusha Wednesday, September 11, 2013 11:41:46 AM

Badly need Ctrl+z = reopen the closed tab

Right click menu doesn't wok on Stash page.

I am not sure if it is known but could you please arrange bookmark sub menu height when we clicked folder. If sub menu list so long, submenu is going to top smile It should be listed under QAB .

Thanks wink I just saw that they also fixed it in Chrome 30 so it's going to be fixed in Opera 17 already, correct? smile

woj-tek Wednesday, September 11, 2013 11:59:51 AM

shouldn't it autoupdate on it's own?

EDIT: also - please add tabs on side (right) - highly needed! sad

If you had any developer stream Opera installed before, then yes, it should. Any issue with it?

it needs a little bit more patience from you smile it's only a few hours since release... as you may/could know it's upgrading continuously.

pajousek Wednesday, September 11, 2013 12:11:05 PM

Will you add the option to open things from QAB by default in new tab (with the left click)? I was really used to that behavior in previous versions of Opera.

And also, will you add settings to be able to display full adress in adress bar? I miss this feature a lot, since I'm a developer and would love to see the full adress all the time when developing.

Anwyasy, thanks for this build, hopefully it will crash less than latest developer preview; that one crashed as hell.

There is some delay always, we are not updating all users at once. That might be the reason. If you have USB installation (which updates silently) check opera://about page from time to time - there should be information about available update and download progress, when it's done - restart.

There should be a limit not to over-populate context menu. It is by design, IIRC. At OMenu, "Recently closed" works also for closed Window, which Ctrl+Shift+T does not work.

BenoisJMBenois Wednesday, September 11, 2013 12:28:38 PM

Hi, thanks for this new version.

When I use the address bar, I can see that it's possible to use different kind of search engines. Good.

But, I also can see some of my extensions next to the search engines icons(like lastpass or gmelius). I do not think they were meant to be there. smile

yossariane Wednesday, September 11, 2013 12:30:24 PM

When you will change that ugly blue color in XP?

Oliver Braunschweigknoelli Wednesday, September 11, 2013 12:30:50 PM

The new version seems to have problems with dynamically created page actions. The function "chrome.pageAction.onClicked.addListener" crashes once the button is clicked. I found this in my extension "LocalPassStore" which works fine up to Opera 17 and still works in Opera 18 if invoked by keyboard (Ctrl+Enter), but crashes if clicked on the address bar icon.

To investigate further and prevent any possible problem in my extension code, I created a small test extension with minimal code:

chrome.tabs.onUpdated.addListener ( doSetup );

function doSetup ( tabID, changeInfo, tab ) {
chrome.pageAction.show ( tabID );
chrome.pageAction.onClicked.addListener ( function() { alert('Crash'); } );
}

This code also makes Opera 18 crash.

Александрavaddon66 Wednesday, September 11, 2013 12:31:20 PM

When will be made personal network settings on the new engine? Without the use of network settings in IE? For computers which are in the domain (such as mine), any browser on chrome cannot be used. Only use the version 12 or mozilla firefox.

artmil Wednesday, September 11, 2013 12:31:20 PM

The popup messages don't have scrollbars
example
javascript:alert('Start\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\Level1\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\Level2\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\Level3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\Level4\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\END');

There is no way(except for keyboard) to click the buttons in the message if the text is to long.

Auto-notification is OK, but please make an option to disable the auto-update and a button to download updates manually.

Still unable to set custom search engine as default. At least in the previous version I could hit "D" and spacebar which would allow me to use DDG. Again DDG will show up as an option but Opera will not allow me to select it. Why is allowing custom search such a challenge?bomb

Mağruf ÇolakoğluZAHEK Wednesday, September 11, 2013 1:12:28 PM

Maybe it is not a bug but it is annoying me. Pls try to move any tab to inside window. The tab preview is wider thas tabs title. I think it is an UI bug.

Yet again on first launch of this update with ”Classic Tabs“ extention* and session continuity enabled, the sequence of open tabs gets reversed.

Also happening in this build as well as the former 17dev-build with running ”Classic Tabs“*, most of the times new tabs opened via Ctrl-T, the O-menu or the +-button are placed at the end of the tab bar, but magically jump the the intended position right next to the current tab on a click on the tab handle or inside the tab. Similarly middle-click opened tabs first assume Opera's default placement, then upon interacting jump to the place intended and assigned by ”Classic Tabs“.

Seems to me a chrome.tabs.onUpdate bug if you don't resort to blaming the extension itself.

* – "When opening a tab: ✓ Open all tabs next to the active tab", "When closing a tab: ✓ Activate the previous tab", "When opening a link in a new tab: ✓ Let Opera decide"

Some small purely aesthetic points:

In XP the frame border is quite thick and not very elegant, it would look much better at half the thickness - and also give some needed real estate on widescreen laptops. Likewise the top banner and tabs could afford a small shave in pixels!

OK, now something that has always stopped me from using Chrome based browsers: My company uses a lot of Java based apps launched from various webpages. Issue 1, Opera does not auto-start the app from the jnlp file - can you add options to 'do this with this file type form now on' Issue 2, the most annoying thing with Chrome and Opera is that they don't clean up after themselves! After a week I have appstart1 until appstart100 in my downloads folder. FF and other browsers remove the jnlp file after launch so it stays nice and uncluttered

Apart from that keep up the good work! I like the way it's moving now, getting more and more usable (and likable) each release

Also since the loss of bookmarks I have actually been forced into some personal admin, and I actually like the new speed dial setup! Takes some reorganising but I find it more intuitive (personal findings though) OK....now stands well back after lighting the touchpaper.... smile
