'Duh, there’s such a huge difference between 14 and 18' Tavi Gevinson on growing up, and leaving fashion for acting as she starts her senior year of high school

Tavi Gevinson at age 18 is light-years different than the 14-year-old ingénue that burst onto the blogging scene four years ago, so she says.

The teenager made a name for herself in 2008 as a sophisticated 14-year-old fashion blogger who quickly shot to fame, finding herself in the front row of fashion shows around the globe outfitted in her trademark grey hair, monstrous hats, and oversized Comme de Garçons coats.

But now, the high school senior is in a different stage of life. With her blonde bob haircut and gamine style, Tavi could easily fit in amongst the Fanning sister clan. She’s diverged from her original ‘Style Rookie’ blog by establishing a miniature media empire called Rookie mag—an online magazine for precocious teens that has already spawned two published books in its two-year history.

New chapter: Tavi Gevinson makes her first major acting debut in 'Enough Said', which she promoted at the Toronto Film Festival in lieu of attending fashion week

Furthering her pursuit of intellectual self-expression, Tavi has even branched out into acting.

Last week, she skipped out on New York Fashion Week, she told The Cut, to promote her first feature film titled Enough Said at the Toronto Film Festival.

‘I didn’t know Fashion Week was going on,’ she told the site.

Earlier this year Tavi publicly declared that she was ‘over’ fashion. No she says ‘I’m not over the parts that were always important to me, but…it’s not like Fashion week is every day, and I’ve been doing it every day for the past few years.’

‘There’s such a huge difference between 14 and 18,’ she added.

Tavi says that her recent foray into acting felt a bit awkward. ‘It is a very different thing for me because I’m part of someone else’s vision, whereas normally I’m a boss of 80 people, and writing is also so different from acting,’ she said of the transition.

Teenage phenomenon: Tavi started her career with a blog called 'Style Rookie' which landed her in the front row of fashion shows around the globe (Here, she poses with Anna Wintour during Fashion's Night Out in 2010)

In Enough Said, holds what The Cut describes as a ‘decent-size supporting role’, acting alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the late James Gandolfini.

‘Everything I’ve read [about the film] is like “It shows this genuine side of him, a twinkle in his eyes,’ she said of the actor who suddenly died of a heart attack in Italy this summer. ‘That’s kind of what he was like in person. He was very warm; he was very funny….it’s weird being here with everyone, except for him. Yeah, it’s just really sad.’

'Now I want to go to school in New York so that working on Rookie and stuff like that can finally become real’

Aside from acting, Tavi seems to be over-occupied with ‘stressful’ senior year homework, and college applications.

‘Now I want to go to school in New York so that working on Rookie and stuff like that can finally become real,’ she said of her aspirations for the near-future. ‘I don’t want, like, another four years of going to class and coming home and working on my laptop and having fear of missing out.’

She says that she is looking into NYU’s Gallatin program and is also ‘really attracted to Barnard, which is part of Columbia, but easier-going.’

It makes sense that Tavi, widely regarded as wise beyond her young years, has already hit the very adult threshold of wanting to ‘unplug’ from the Internet. She says that she’s considering taking a cross-country road trip following high school graduation in an effort to regain some non-Internet publicized privacy.

‘I shared a lot of my life online for a long time, and I think it would be nice to have an experience that isn’t, like, shared in any [way].’

Speaking like a true online phenom she said: ‘I’m sorry. I think, I mean, it does do something to you psychologically when your brain develops as you’re Instagramming.’

Cuteness. Good for her. Hopefully she can make a go of it, and not end up some tattooed, drug addicted loser like half the other celebs running around.
