Communications Intern (Fall 2013)

The New Republic is seeking a communications intern to support the communications team with all public and media relations efforts, including publicity of The New Republic’s content, talent, and brand.  The right candidate will have a passion for news and excellent writing skills.    

Job Responsibilities

  • Reports to communications manager
  • Research and writing of daily pitches
  • Build press lists of journalists, bloggers, and television and radio programs to pitch our content to
  • Help communications team with special projects, such as media plans for each new issue of the magazine
  • Administrative support to communications team
  • Attend weekly editorial and communications strategy meetings
  • Closely follow the daily news cycle



  • Must have completed at least two years of college coursework
  • Have an affinity for and understanding of the value of original, premium, long-form journalism
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Organized, disciplined, and strong work ethic
  • Position is Washington, DC based
  • Ability to work at least 20 hours a week from September 16 to December 2013 (exact end date is negotiable)

The New Republic seeks a highly motivated, entrepreneurial individual to assist in its New York office.  This role provides a unique opportunity for broad exposure to the business behind The New Republic.

The assistant will serve as the NYC office manager; production assistant for tablet and mobile applications; and provide support to the Chief Operating Officer.  S/he will also have the opportunity to work on projects in the areas of circulation, design and production, digital, events, marketing, and strategy at an exciting time of growth for The New Republic.  The right candidate will have a passion for the business of media, new technologies, and a strong interest in the future of the industry.  To apply, submit a resume and cover letter to Eliza Murphy at emurphy@tnr.com.

Responsibilities include:

Office Manager: primary

  • Reception duties include answering phones, distributing mail, and greeting visitors
  • Upkeep of office and kitchen that includes tracking inventory and ordering and stocking supplies
  • Main point of contact for facilities management
  • Main point of contact for staff with IT problems; responsible for either handling yourself or contacting the appropriate vendor for service
  • Main point of contact for all vendors providing service to the office, i.e. cleaning, IT, cable and internet, etc.
  • Help to onboard new employees in the NYC office
  • Manage office-wide initiatives such as events and retreats


Production Assistant: primary

Assist the design and production team with:

  • Adapting print and web content into tablet and mobile formats
  • Coordinating image conversion for multiple projects
  • General quality control for tablet and mobile instances


Customer Service: secondary

  • Manage some customer service inquiries that need to be fixed digitally by working with the Director of Digital Product


Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer: tertiary

  • Serve as primary support for the COO by assisting with the coordination of some meetings


Opportunity for substantive and long-term project development in areas of interest

Based in New York, NY (office located by Madison Square Park)


  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
  • Organized and disciplined with an ability to juggle multiple assignments

  • At least one year of professional experience preferred

The New Republic is seeking fall editorial interns who display close attention to detail, have strong writing and editing skills, and show initiative in seeking out opportunities to contribute to the magazine. Journalism experience is preferred, but not imperative; some familiarity with HTML is helpful, but not crucial; and fluency in search techniques like LexisNexis is mandatory. Interns are asked to contribute to The New Republic by: 

  • Preparing and updating TNR's homepage and other web pages
  • Conducting research for editors
  • Fact-checking pieces
  • Copy-editing pieces
  • Participating in TNR staff meetings and pitching stories
  • Helping update and maintain TNR's online archive
  • Undertaking occasional administrative and organizational tasks


The New Republic will hire both Politics intern and Books and Arts interns.
