Ansett Airlines of Australia, one of Australia's two major domestic carriers, is a subsidiary of Ansett Transport Industries (ATI). The company operates an extensive network of scheduled passenger and cargo services covering all the states of the Commonwealth of Australia. Cargo operations are undertaken as the Ansett Air Freight division of ATI. East-West Airlines was taken over by the owners of Ansett in 1987. Since then ATI has embarked on a policy of acquiring sharehold ings in a number of carriers throughout the globe. These include: Ansett New Zealand (50%), America West (20%), Ladeco (25%) and Kendell Airlines (75%). History: The airline was founded in 1936 by R. M. Ansett as Ansett Airways. In 1963 a controlling interest was acquired in MacRobertson Miller Airlines, which is now wholly owned and operates as Ansett WA. Other wholly owned subsidiaries of ATI include Ansett NT, Air NSW, Ansett Air Freight, Ansett International Travel, Trans Pacific Enterprises and, since 1986, Ansett World wide Aviation Services. Management services are provided for Polynesian Airlines. In 1979 there were nearly 18,000 ordinary shareholders in ATI, but in 1980 this changed with Sir Peter Abeles' Thomas Nationwide I Transport Group and Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation acquiring over 99 per cent of the company. Ansett NT (formerly Airlines of Northern Australia) operates scheduled passenger, cargo and mail services linking Darwin with Katherine, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Ayers Rock, Gove (Nhulunbuy), Cairns, and Groote Eylandt (Alyangula) in Arnhem Land, and also between Cairns and Ayers Rock. History: The airline was formed in 1981 as a division of Ansett Transport Industries. The company name was changed to Ansett NT in August 1985. Fleet: one F.28-1000, one BAe 146-200. The network covers Kalgoorlie, Ayers Rock, Alice Springs; Darwin and Kununurra in the north-east, and nine points in the north-west. History: The airline began operations in October 1955 as MacRobertson Miller Airline Services (MMA), follow ing the merger of MacRobertson Miller Aviation (founded in 1934) and Airlines (Western Australia), formed in 1935. In January 1969 Ansett acquired the outstanding shareholding (32 per cent) and MMA became a wholly owned division of Ansett Transport Industries. In December 1984 the name was changed to Ansett WA. Antilliaanse Luchtvaart Maatschappij (ALM Antillean Airlines) operates a network of regional scheduled services from Curacao to Caracas, Paramaribo, Santo Domingo, Aruba, Bonaire, St Maarten, San Juan, Medellin, Bogota, Port of Spain, Kingston, Port-au- Prince, New York, and Miami. History: ALM was formed in 1964 to take over the services of the Caribbean Division of KLM, and oper ations began in August of that year. History: Bakhtar was established in 1967 to operate domestic services, and to develop services to isolated communities. Arkia Israeli Airlines operates scheduled domestic passenger and cargo services linking Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Eilat, Haifa, Masada, and Rosh Pina. The carrier also undertakes charters to European destinations such as London, Paris, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Hamburg. Kanaf Arkia Airline and Aviation Services holds 75 per cent of the shares, the remainder being held by airline employees through a trustee company. History: The airline was originally formed in 1950 as Arkia Inland Airlines, which in 1972 acquired 50 per cent of the stock of Kanaf Airlines and Aviation Services, and formed Kanaf Arkia Airline and Aviation Services. In March 1980 Kanaf Arkia acquired the remaining stock of Arkia and merged the two operations. Subsidiaries: Ancillary activities include ground handling, wet and dry leasing of aircraft, pilot training, maintenance services, excursions, and cloud-seeding.
