Job Summary
The Michigan Sea Grant College Program (MSG) is a program within the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE). SNRE’s mission is to contribute to the protection of the Earth’s resources and the achievement of a sustainable society. The Michigan Sea Grant College Program seeks a full time Research Program Manager to manage preparation, submission, coordination, and reporting on central and extramurally funded research activities. MSG’s mission is to foster economic growth and protect Michigan’s coastal and Great Lakes resources through education, research, and outreach. It is a collaborative effort of the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and the NOAA National Sea Grant network of 32 universitybased programs.
This is a highly responsible position through which the candidate will have the opportunity to coordinate multiinvestigator proposals for funding through MSG and administer the peer-reviewed grant processes of MSG. Future opportunities may be possible to work independently to secure grant funding to support thecandidate’s own research. The position requires a proactive individual to serve on the Management Team and network with federal, state, local, and NGO constituents to determine research priorities and opportunities.
Responsibilities*
The successful candidate will manage the research functions of MSG, supervise staff in the research program in Ann Arbor, and coordinate work across a variety of federal, state, and local organizations as well as NGOs.
-Manage the research portfolio of MSG, particularly related to the Omnibus grant from NOAA which provides the basic support for the entire program. This duty includes managing the biennial request for proposal process (see: www.miseagrant.umich.edu/research/)
-Provide budgetary oversight for all research projects
-Coordinate reporting efforts for all research activities
-Develop new initiatives and strategies for improving and expanding MSG programs and resources
-Pursue research opportunities that contribute to the strategic plan of MSG and to expand its research agenda
-Prepare and submit proposals for funding by outside sources
-Coordinate research activities with Michigan State University, other Michigan universities, and program constituents
-Work with the MSG Management Team to identify research opportunities and participants
-Network with constituents to identify research needs and potential participants in research projects
-Supervise personnel in the research program
-Assist the director in intellectual leadership and policy development for MSG
Supervision Received:
Supervision of the position will be through the Director of MSG.
Required Qualifications*
-Graduate degree in an area of related environmental or social sciences, such as economics, education, policy and related human dimensions, or environmental informatics. PhD or terminal degree in the field of study is strongly preferred.
-A strong network of contacts in research, natural resource management and policy from the Great Lakes region.
-Experience with preparation and submission of research proposals.
-A successful research record demonstrated by grant proposal writing and coordination, funding support, presentation of results at public meetings, publication and application of project results.
-Ability to coordinate activities across organizations in the state of Michigan, particularly Michigan State University.
-Willingness to travel extensively within Michigan, with some national travel.
-Ability to work with other high level administrators and research scientists.
-Experience in program planning and administration.
Desired Qualifications*
-An academic background in ecology, economics, education, policy, or spatial analysis.
-Experience in integrated research programs that cross disciplinary lines.
