They're about to make their debut performance in Sydney - but, clearly, the boys of One Direction won't need to worry about whether it will be a success.

The British five-piece are already the subject of a major fever pitch down under.

Harry Styles, Zane Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne have collectively caused hordes of teenage girls to recreate Beatle-mania in the sunshine city.

Hundreds of die-hard 'Directioners' have gathered near the backstage door of the city's Allphones Arena, where the boys will be performing in a few hours.

One can be seen holding a sign saying 'We've waited 525 days', while another says 'You're proof that not all heroes wear capes'.

Countless more are dressed in makeshift 1D fan-wear, while others wave memorabilia in anticipation of the eagerly-anticipated performance.

One dramatic picture, which harks back to the days of Beatlemania - shows an entire car park packed with fans desperate to see their idols.

Meanwhile, others were a little more contained - displaying their affections with just the possession of a One Direction T-shirt.

This isn't the first time that the boys have had to contend with fanatical behaviour from their antipodean fans.

Earlier this month, when the band were in Adelaide, Liam Payne had to warn fans to be wary of snake attacks.

In a concerned message on Twitter, he said: ‘Girls behind the hotel please get out the fields there's a huge sign saying snake habitat it's just not worth it someone's gunna get hurt.’

When they ignored him, he added: ‘Are u not reading what I'm saying its a SNAKE HABITAT TURN AROUND.’

Their die-hard fans clearly aren't exclusive to Australia, though. Last year, the band were greeted by over 15,000 screaming fans at New York's Rockefeller Plaza.

Impressively, many of them had camped out for as long as five days in the cold and rain.

One Direction's Take Me Home tour will conclude in Melbourne on October 30.
