A flight of fancy that nose dives: Could this get any worse?

BAGGAGE CLAIM (12A)

VERDICT: Lame romcom

Rating: 1 Star Rating

A flight attendant serially unlucky in love looks for a husband, but doesn’t see that the best catch is under her nose.

Not even his name gives her a clue — yes, he’s Mr Wright — but we, the audience, are much more on the ball, and can see every twist and turn of this feeble and unoriginal romantic comedy long before they arrive.

There are some nice moments, and it is always good to see that fine veteran actor Ned Beatty, here playing a hidebound Republican donor, but they are swamped by a plot and a script that would be better aired in a cheesy ballad, or even a hairspray commercial.

Most of the cast are African- American, as is writer-director David E. Talbert, who occasionally tries to say something profound about black America, but only in the form of crashing cliches.

As our hapless heroine, Montana, Paula Patton gives a strangely  simpering performance.

However, she does get the best  line. ‘Could this get any worse?’ she cries, standing on a fire escape trying  to escape her latest flame’s  jealous girlfriend.

I was asking myself the same question. And the answer, alas, was yes.
