What were you thinking? Alessandra Ambrosio's fiance Jamie Mazur drives down street with their 17-month-old son on his lap

Alessandra Ambrosio’s fiancé was spotted driving his car with their baby son on his lap on Wednesday.

Jamie Mazur took a drive near the couple’s home in Brentwood, California with Noah, 17 months, but instead of having the youngster strapped safely into a baby seat, he held Noah on his lap.

While the tot looked to be having the time of his life, sporting a huge smile as he clutched the steering wheel, there is no doubt that Jason will be criticised for the reckless move.

There was no sign of Alessandra or the couple’s five-year-old daughter Anja although Alessandra was seen out and about with Noah on Thursday.

The duo arrived at a day care in Santa Monica in the morning, with Ambrosio in dressed down mode in tight grey tracksuit bottoms and a grey and green top.

She added black trainers and carried a large black bag.

Noah looked adorable in a white T-shirt and navy tracksuit bottoms.

Meanwhile, Jamie’s reckless behaviour mirrored Britney Spears’ motoring faux pas when she was snapped in February 2006 driving along with son Sean Preston on her lap rather than strapped safely into a baby car seat.

At the time, the singer used the bizarre defence that she'd put him on her lap to 'escape the paparazzi’.

She insisted: 'I instinctively took measures to get my baby and me out of harm's way, but the paparazzi continued to stalk us.  I love my child and would do anything to protect him.'

Britney, like Jamie, was on a public road rather than a private driveway.

In photographs taken at the scene, another vehicle can clearly be seen driving along the road behind Jamie, which could have proved dangerous for him and Noah.

Dangerous: From the series of pictures it is evident the car was moving down the street with Noah not securely fastened into a car seat

According to California statute Section 27360 ‘a parent, legal guardian, or driver shall not transport on a highway in a motor vehicle… a child or ward who is under eight years of age, without properly securing that child in a rear seat in an appropriate child passenger restraint system meeting applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards’.

In California, violating the seat belt law is a primary offense meaning that if Jamie was spotted by an officer he would have been pulled over and received a ticket.

Omg that kid looks just like his dad. Nothing like mom. Poor thing.

Collision, airbag, bye bye. Not the stupid parent, but the poor kid who would serve as a cushion for the adult behind him. The statue is in every state and not just in California. They are there for a good reason.

When I was a kid whenever we got onto my street my Dad would let me sit on his lap and steer/pretend to drive we went about 1 mph and it was only about 30 feet. You people who are so concerned have to remember that nobody in the world loves their kids more than they do, I highly doubt they were speeding around getting crazy. You can't tell the story from a picture.

They are never with their children. Why is it a shock that when they finally are, they're lousy parents?

They look like they are on a neighborhood street with barely anyone on the road. My mom used to let me sit on her lap and "drive" when I was a kid. I made it just fine.
