Carrie Underwood reveals secret to staying trim... and why she's not worried about breaking strict vegan diet from time to time

She's the queen of country but do not expect her to be lining up at a cookout any time soon.

Starring on the cover of Women's Heath, Carrie Underwood has revealed while she may be a red blooded American, she doesn't go near any red blooded food.

Instead the 30-year-old American Idol winner tires attempts to stick to a vegan diet, avoiding all the meat and trappings people normally associate with country music and lifestyle.

But the star admits to sometimes cheating on the difficult-to-abide-by diet - which cuts out all animal products including eggs, diary and even honey.

The Two Black Cadillacs singer confessed to Women's Health sometimes she slips: 'I am a vegan but I consider myself to be a practical vegan.'

'If I order something on a menu and it has a sprinkling of cheese on top I’m not going to send it back.

'The vegan thing is something I try to do my best on because it’s a cheesy world out there.'

Shunning meat for almost a decade, the 30-year-old star says when she's on vacation it can be the hardest.

'We recently went to Italy and they put cheese in, on and around everything. So I kind of had to be vegetarian when I was on vacation, and now that I’ve been back home I’ve been getting back into my vegan lifestyle.'

And it has certainly been working for her, with the country music legend showing off her hard worked for physique on the front of November's magazine.

Looking more like she is about to hit the beaches of California, the singer dons a pair of black and gold mini shorts - which prefect complimented her tanned legs - and a black tank, under which she decided to go bra free.

However Carrie's hair almost steals the show glistening in perfect waves in the cover shot.

The country star - who was just nominated for an American Music Award on Thursday - may have her secret indulgence to thank for the great looking locks.

According to the 30-year-old, almost everything beauty or food related can be helped with one little ingredient - coconut butter.

'I put it on my food, I put it on my face, I put it on my hair.

'If it’s winter, the second I get out of the shower, I spread it all over and it feels really good and it smells good too.'

The star has recently been spending extended amounts of time in New York working on new project, Sound Of Music.

The project is a live televised musical and Carrie could not be more excited.

'I’ve been in New York quite a bit doing run-through’s and working on a kind of music that’s not exactly the kind of music that I’m use to singing.

'So it’s been a lot of work and it’s been really challenging. But I think in the end it’s really going to be very rewarding.

'It’s going to be exciting to actually do a musical live on TV.'

It pays off: The 30-year-old, pictured here last month at the Emmys, always looks stunning and says her secret is coconut butter which she both eats and puts on her hair and body

A lot of people choose to be vegetarian and vegan as much as is possible, but that doesn't mean when they stray for a meal or two that they are phonies! If more people ate this way, they would be healthier. I eat vegetarian meals several times a week for my own health and for environmental impact. I like meat, but even small changes are beneficial. And, conversely, it's not like we meat-eaters are ever called phonies if we eat a meal without meat! It's laughable, really.

Aside from the illiteracy of the article, (" tires attempts to" ..."which prefect complimented her tanned legs") What does "attempts to stick to a vegan diet, avoiding all the meat and trappings people normally associate with country music and lifestyle." even mean? And who says being vegan is a "difficult-to-abide-by diet"? There's vegan alternatives for everything these days.
