Even on his throwaway early stories featuring characters we’d never (?) see again, Xaime was a master of composition, staging, posing, and character design. Rocket & Fumble could have been a lesser cartoonist’s signature achievement, a still-fondly remembered Eclipse, First, Comico or Pacific feature, the prelude to beloved runs at Marvel and DC. The reality we got is still preferable, I think; but going through these old issues I love being reminded of how fluid things once were, how much Fantagraphics was still just another hopeful publisher (their breathless ad copy for Dalgoda will never stop being funny).
Anyway. Still a couple hours on the left coast to wish the man a happy birthday.
