He's been making a name for himself as a convincingly brawny villain in blockbuster films such as this summer's sci fi epic Elysium.

And Sharlto Copley has just been revealed as the nemesis in Spike Lee's highly anticipated remake of Oldboy.

A new still from the upcoming revenge film shows the 39-year-old actor shirtless waist deep in a pool, as his body looks ripped in more ways than one.

The South African's half nude body in the photograph is impressively muscular with well-defined shoulders and a chest that looks to be carved out of sheet rock.

But adorning the entire left side of his torso is a massive scar, indicating that his character is the survivor of a terrible accident.

Copley portrays villainous billionaire Adrian Pryce in the film.

The character seeks revenge on advertising executive Joe Doucett, played by Josh Brolin, for a childhood trauma that has been forgotten by everyone other than Pryce.

Pryce imprisons Doucett for 20 years in a solitary room for crimes unknown to the adman, as part of a vast web of both psychological and physical torture to enact his vengeance.

Also starring in the film is Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Marie - a woman who aids Brolin in his search to find out the truth of his imprisonment after being mysteriously released.

Trailers for the film include a love scene between rising star Olsen and Brolin and a tagline which reads: 'Nothing is more twisted than the truth.'

The 2003 movie Oldboy was directed by Park Chan-Wook and starred South Korean actor Choi Min-sik as protagonist Oh Dae-su.

The original won the Cannes Grand Prix back in 2003 and was showered with critical acclaim, despite its 'squeamish and violent' nature.

The remake, directed by Spike Lee, is set for release in the US on November 27.

I think he is an underrated actor. I loved him in District 9.

Don't bother watching it, watch the original. It is a truly amazing film, don't be put off by the subtitles. In fact, watch the entire Vengeance Trilogy - brilliant! I will be boycotting this film on the grounds of good sense

The original film is amazing. This won't come close. I urge anyone who's thinking of going to see the remake to not bother and get the original on dvd.

Grow up. Few things are more annoying than movie snobs who insist that all originals are better than their remakes. The movie hasn't even come out yet and you are declaring it terrible. Speaks volumes of your critiquing skills.

It doesn't matter if they remake it, it'll go straight to DVD, and then no one will buy the DVD. Everyone knows it won't have anything on the original. Which in itself is pretty epic in a strange way.

Old Boy (Korean), one of the best films I've ever seen, just too good.

I urge anyone who has not seen the original to go see it before seeing this pointless remake. It was the first time i watched a korean film and since then i cant get enough of them, Korean filmmakers have no boundaries or PC red tape, they know how to make good quality films. I will go and see this out of curiosity but can not imagine it will be better than the original.

Completely agree, i have seen so many Korean films now, not one i didn't enjoy. Always original thought, the best acting and a bit of shock factor, some of the best films ever in my opinion. I recommend Joint Security Area if you haven't seen it already.

Mmm no sorry he's not doing anything for me. Josh Brolin on the other hand is looking good. I have high hopes that he will save this film as I can't imagine it holding a candle to the Original.

I absolutely loathed that sci fi movie District 9 he was in. Can't believe I sat through it to the bitter end.

We LOVED District 9 - found it really thought provoking about the treatment of "aliens" and how potential enemies had to work together to fight against a common threat.
