'I wrote it about my wife': Robin Thicke defends derogatory song Blurred Lines by claiming it was composed for Paula Patton

It's a song that is seen as being deeply offensive and derogatory towards women given controversial lyrics such as 'I know you want it' and 'let me liberate ya'.

But Robin Thicke now says his hit single Blurred Lines is actually about his actress wife Paula Patton.

The 36-year-old recently defended the song claiming that the erotic and seemingly aggressive lyrics were harmless and intended to celebrate his 20 year relationship with wife Paula.

The hitmaker told the BBC's Newsbeat at 1Xtra Live in Liverpool 'I don't think people got it', referring to the song's accompanying music video.

The online sensation featured three scantily-clad models in various states of undress - including topless - writhing about as Thicke and collaborators T.I. and Pharrell 'groped' them.

In fact, the clip was banned from YouTube in its original, unedited form.

While the singer previously dismissed the controversy surrounding the video as 'ridiculous', he took to defending it on 1Xtra Live.

'I wrote it [Blurred Lines] about my wife,' Robin explained.

In the song, Robin croons 'she's my good girl'.

Thicke now claims that the lyric is about his 37-year-old wife Paula, explaining: 'She's my good girl. And I know she wants it because we've been together for 20 years.'

The couple first met in high school and began dating when Robin was just 16-years-old.

The song has now sold over 1.36million copies, even beating out Daft Punk's Get Lucky in sales.

The numbers prove that any publicity is good publicity, breaking records and rocketing to number one in a whopping 80 countries.

But while it's been suggested that the song contains 'rape overtones' and degrades women, one person has come out to defend the 'hit of the summer'.

Actor Alan Thicke, best known to a generation as patriarch Dr Jason Seaver in Growing Pains during the 1980s and early '90s, has jumped to his son's defence over his controversial lyrics and sexy, suggestive music video.

Talking to The Canadian Press on Monday, the 66-year-old said, 'I think that there are blurred lines within the Blurred Lines. T.I.’s rap is kind of graphic; Robin’s point of view, I think, in his own parts of the song... is kind of female empowerment when you look at it.'

He continues, 'It’s not so much “we know you want it” - it’s “we hope you want it”. It’s still a guy waiting for permission, saying, “I’m not your maker”. Nobody grabs anybody; we’re waiting for permission here. And not only that, but it’s guys trying to be cute and funny.

'This is not a lascivious video. There’s no humping and grinding, as we’ve been seeing in music videos for two decades now... We’re not doing the Anthony Weiner story here, [they’re] just kind of putting it out there playfully and we’ll see who responds.'

Having experienced his own success in the music industry - composing theme tunes to shows including The Facts Of Life, Diff'rent Strokes and Wheel Of Fortune - Alan insists the 36-year-old's video clip is no racier than anything he's seen over the past several decades.

'I’m actually a little surprised at the response, at least to the nudity, because I’ve seen things I thought were much more sexual than simply [being] topless. If it was that simple to get global attention and create these maelstrom over simply taking your top off, hell, somebody should have done that long ago,' he states.

'Most of the other videos for years have been about booty... For some reason, when they switched from booty to booby, everyone went nuts.'

Alan has received a boost in popularity himself since the release of Blurred Lines, with a number of mash-ups and parodies created by fans popping up on YouTube.

In one example, the star's 1988 song Sweaty And Hot - in which he gives an hilarious and energetic performance at the Crystal Light National Aerobic Championship - has been dubbed over with
Blurred Lines.

Another simply shows stills from the current music video with Alan's image replacing his son's alongside models Emily Ratajkowski, Jessi M’Bengue and Elle Evans, as well as several Growing Pains cast shots.

'It’s insane. I’m so thrilled,' the proud dad gushes of Robin's success in recent years. 'He’s so deserving not only as an artist but as a human being. His work ethic is exemplary. I don’t know anybody that works harder than Robin or takes his art more seriously than he does.

'We talk every day. He’s a wonderful son and a great artist and I couldn’t be happier.'

Meanwhile, the singer's actress wife, Paula Patton, opened up on Chelsea Lately last week about her feelings when it comes to the sexy video.

'I watched that video. I was a little bit jealous, then I wanted to jump his bones. I was like, "I want to take you down right now!" That's how I know it's a hit!'

The 37-year-old also revealed to comedian Chelsea Handler that she was the one who convinced her husband to film the topless version.

'He's like, "I don't know; I'm nervous",' she said. 'And we watched it and I thought, "It's amazing."

'I think it's beautiful. It's too bad it's taken all this heat and controversy, 'cause it's very innocent and it's fun.'

The music scene seems to be more about exposing flesh than the music now.I wish they would all stop prostituting their talents to compete for hits.

Ever since DM posted a pic of him without a shirt, I am not impressed. He is not sexy and should never be seen without a shirt again.

Not sexy at all, in fact he is plain ugly. I don't see the appeal of a small forehead, ugly nose, and small mouth.

So much drama...over a SONG. I really don't understand all of the negative comments about him.He and his wife have been together since they were in their teens. He tells of their struggles in the early days but they are still together. I think she knows him by now don't you think? There's really no need to get so politically correct...aren't there more pressing issues in the world today??

I used to think this was an attractive couple. But since I saw his interview with Oprah I think he has no class whatsoever. He basically spent the interview trying to extricate himself from any responsibility in the MTV performance with Miley.. He is doing the same thing that Justin did to Janet. Throwing her @$$ under the bus. He knew exactly what that girl was doing against his groin because he was responding to it.
