Shin Megami Tensei IV Storms to Number One in Japanese Charts

Wii U version of Resident Evil Revelations sneaks into top ten

For fans of the franchise, Shin Megami Tensei IV can't come to the West soon enough. The Atlus title will arrive in North America on 16th July with some collectible goodies, while a European release is confirmed but, as yet, doesn't have a solid date.

It landed in Japan last week, however, and it shouldn't surprise us that it's jumped straight in at number one in the Media Create charts. The software top 20 even has a rare sighting of a Wii U title, with Resident Evil Revelations, though it's been heavily out-performed by the PS3 equivalent — lifetime sales (not including all download purchases) are in parenthesis.

1. [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei IV – 188,562 (New)
2. [PS3] Kamen Rider: Battride War – 128,659 (New)
3. [PS3] Resident Evil: Revelations (Capcom, 05/23/13) – 102,673 (New)
4. [3DS] Tomodachi Collection: New Life – 59,876 (984,984)
5. [PSV] Valhalla Knights 3 – 40,357 (New)
6. [PS3] Terraria – 19,861 (New)
7. [3DS] Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon – 19,079 (731,304)
8. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 15,489 (3,232,840)
9. [PSP] Summon Night 5 – 13,624 (119,135)
10. [Wii U] Resident Evil: Revelations – 8,398 (New)
11. [360] Resident Evil: Revelations – 7,053 (New)
12. [PS3] Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen – 5,334 (184,088)
13. [Wii] Taiko Drum Master Wii Super Wonderful Edition – 5,190 (482,930)
14. [PS3] Zillions of Enemy X: Zetsukai no Crusade – 5,019 (New)
15. [3DS] Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission – 4,105 (193,160)
16. [3DS] Tamagotchi no Doki Doki Dream Omisecchi – 3,961 (New)
17. [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 – 3,517 (2,032,180)
18. [PS3] Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse – 3,138 (15,511)
19. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 – 3,045 (2,054,247)
20. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Best Price!) – 2,612 (310,085)

On the hardware side of things, the release of Shin Megami Tensei IV has provided a major boost to the 3DS LL — or XL as it is in the West — though there's little notable movement elsewhere. The Wii U continues to struggle, with this week perhaps providing some additional evidence that major exclusives are needed rather than multi-platform releases, as the lion's share of the Resident Evil Revelations sales went to the significantly more established PS3.

3DS LL – 40,651 (24,123)
3DS – 14,059 (13,001)
PlayStation 3 – 13,318 (10,948)
PlayStation Vita – 12,171 (10,931)
PSP – 5,749 (6,524)
Wii U – 5,648 (6,037)
Wii – 1,192 (1,143)
Xbox 360 – 382 (349)

So there you have it — another week, another dominant set of sales figures for the 3DS. The handheld's strong run just keeps on going in Nintendo's homeland.

Haha, I predicted correctly how many copies it was going to sale :D (<200.000, >175.000).

Too bad that Revelations didn't pump WiiU sales up. :/

@DarkCoolEdge It's going to take Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101 and the holiday releases for that. I'm hopeful it will! Perhaps after E3 people will start to buy them as well.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is my 6th favorite game of all time and SMT: Strange Journey is the best game on the DS (and the best game in last gen as a whole). With those things in mind I am more than little hyped.

Glad to see this. Keeping bringing RPG goodness to Nintendo consoles Atlus. All ready Pre-ordered/paid day one purchase and play. Will be the 1st game since Nocturne that I devote lots of time into. Looking forward to it.

The game looks good but the characters designs are very ugly with weird and stupid haircuts!

The part I find amusing is that animal crossing, which came out in november, is still in the top 10.

Well, people who actually bought it at this point should use every excuse they can to get a new game so that the system isn't completely drowned in dust when Smash is released.

Well, OK, next time I'm just buying US 3DS instead of EU. Not mad, but kinda sick of Europe silent delays.

I wonder if it is as good as Persona 4: Golden. P4G was the first JRPG I really finished. Bring it on Atlus...
