Beyond Sport Names Council for Responsible Sport To Shortlist For Their Sport For The Environment Aw

ReSport Certification joins NHL’s Water Restoration Project and NRDC’s Sports Greening Project on select list of programs to be recognized at upcoming Beyond Sport Summit in London, July 23-25, 2012.

May 1, 2012 – Portland, OR: Beyond Sport, the global organization that promotes, develops and supports the use of sport as a tool for positive change across the world announced the official shortlist for its 2012 Beyond Sport Awards today. From 322 applicants for this year’s Beyond Sport Awards, 30 projects have been shortlisted in a variety of award categories. In the Sport for the Environment category, the Council for Responsible Sport’s ReSport Certification program was named one of three on the shortlist, along with the Natural Resources Defense Council’s Sports Greening Project and the National Hockey League’s Water Restoration Project.

“We couldn’t be more pleased or honored,” said Keith Peters, the Council’s Executive Director. “During the application process, I reviewed all 19 of the nominees for Beyond Sport’s Sport for the Environment Award, and was humbled by the great work being done in countries big and small, all over the world. To be named to the shortlist for this award is beyond my wildest dreams.”

In addition to the Sport for the Environment Award category, Beyond Sport Awards recognize programs that address the following areas: Sport for Social Inclusion, Sport for Health, Sport for Conflict Resolution and Sport for Education. Awards will also be given for Best New Project, Sport Federation or Governing Body of the Year, Corporation of the Year and Sport Team of the Year. The Council for Responsible Sport’s ReSport Certification program provides an independent, comprehensive certification for event directors to incorporate environmental and socially responsible initiatives into their events while informing consumers about events that adhere to higher standards of sustainability. ReSport Certified events range in size from the ParalympicsGB Training Camp at the University of Bath in the UK, with some 150 athletes participating, to the AJC Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, Georgia, with 55,077 timed finishers. To date, 37 different events have achieved certification from the Council for Responsible Sport, serving over 570,000 athletes in the process.

The current version of the Council for Responsible Sport’s certification standards were developed by an outside working group of 18 sustainability experts and reviewed by a wide range of stakeholders. ReSport Certification is modeled after the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Green Building Rating System, which certifies buildings and materials according to resource conservation and energy efficiency criteria.
