  • Book Reviews: Confessions are good for the Soul…
Lastly, what made Fatima write this book? Somewhere in the book, 300 pages later, we see the family celebrating Murtaza's 42nd birthday at one of those exclusive restaurants. "You should write a book," says Fatima to her father. Murtaza replies, "I can't write a book about life when I am still alive" and a few days later he is shot dead along with several of his bodyguards and friends. Years later, Fatima becomes a poet and the genesis of "Songs of Blood and Sword: A daughter’s memoir" takes place. The book is readable but if you want to know anything about Pakistani politics and the role of the Bhutto clan, then this is not the book! Read On

  • Book Reviews: An interesting whist drive of a Read, Yet disappointing Veteran
The title makes you stumble a bit. It says "Miracle of the millennium" in bright yellow. Below that is the second line, "America goes black" and below that is the third line, "Barack Obama" and the last line, "Strides into the White House" and this again is in yellow. This book is written by a respected and much admired senior journalist, C. M. Ramachandra, who was The Hindu’s Bureau Chief in Bangalore for a little more than 40 years. The author himself has published the book. Read On

  • Book Reviews: Romances of Coorg Princess Victoria Gowramma
The British hoped that a union between Maharaja Duleep Singh and Princess Gowramma would act as a catalyst in encouraging voluntary conversion to Christianity amongst the upper castes in India, especially the Hindu rulers. Belliappa says: "For the evangelists, there was the delightful possibility of eventually a predominant Christian India emerging, which would owe allegiance to the Church of England." Queen Victoria took a personal liking for Princess Gowramma and was personally present for her baptism ritual performed by none other than the Archbishop of Canterbury. Read On

  • Book Reviews: Coorg, an Insider’s perspective
The newly released book on Coorg — Rise and Fall of the Coorg State, Kodagu's Loss, Karnataka's Gain — tries to throw light on the circumstances leading to the unpopular merger of the erstwhile Coorg State (now officially known as Kodagu District) with Karnataka in 1956. The book also deals with the neglect ever since of the scenic Kodagu by successive governments in Karnataka. Authored by the Bangalore - based freelance journalist P. T. Bopanna, the book finds answers to some of the questions like why the key players, including the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, took such a shortsighted decision resulting in the snuffing out of the prosperous Coorg State forever from the Indian map. • Book Talk: Gandhi’s epistle to Obama
He has the courage to say that Nehru "ushered in an era of Licence-Permit Raj in India" and that it was only with the entry of a "South Indian Brahmin Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and a Punjabi economist Dr. Manmohan Singh" that we opened up ourselves to globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation and carved our path of progress — a hard fact the Congress party is shy of admitting. Rightly again he comments on the way the Great Gandhi's name has been cleverly monopolised by a single family: "My country's most famous political dynasty of Nehru has succeeded in this scramble by a quirk of fate when Nehru's daughter married a Parsi with a surname Ghandy (see the difference in spelling!). The spelling has been politically corrected. So you get Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi... This will continue ad infinitum, ad nauseam." Read On
