Katie Holmes joins Twitter... but could have used a more flattering avatar photo

Many celebrities like to keep their fans updated on their daily lives.

And Katie Holmes, 34, evidently thought it was time to catch up as she opened up her own Twitter page.

The actress evidently has legions of fans, as within hours of opening her page, she amassed over 3,000 followers.

But the Hollywood actress could perhaps have chosen a more flattering avatar photo.

The star opted for a candid rather than a professional shot, sporting very little makeup aside from soft eyeliner and a pale lipstick.

The actress leaned into the camera for a close-up, while she wore her brunette hair loose without any styling.

First Tweet: Katie wrote how happy she was to have joined the social network

Her very first Tweet declared how excited she was to be joining the social network. She wrote: ‘So happy to be on twitter!!!!!! Sending first tweets from South Africa!!!!!’

She also shared a photo of the cast of her new movie The Giver, which she is currently filming in Cape Town, South Africa.

The black-and-white shot looked to be showing Katie relaxing in a restaurant with actors Taylor Swift, Jeff Bridges, Odeya Rush and Cameron Monaghan.

The film is based on the Newberry Medal winning young-adult novel by Lois Lowry, which tells of a society that doesn't realise it's dystopian because everyone lacks memories or emotions.

‘I'm really excited about it,’ the actress told E! News at the Global Citizen Festival in NYC's Central Park.

The film is set to be released in August next year.

Meanwhile, Katie also shared a link to Bobbi Brown’s Secrets For A Kick-Ass Life.

Katie is an ambassador for the makeup brand and is modelling in a number of campaigns, while she has collaborated on the Bobbi + Katie makeup collection.
