To the north Georgia is bordered by Tennessee and North Carolina. On the south, there is Florida. South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean are to the east and on the west is Alabama and a very small portion of Florida.

Weather & Climate
Climate is subtropical. The
winters are usually fairly mild and the summers are hot and humid.
Average annual precipitation: between 40 and 75 inches per year depending on
the area of the state.
Occasional snow may fall in northern Georgia, but rarely last more than a day
or two.

History:
In 1540, Hernando de Soto became the first European to come into what would eventually become Georgia. Spain placed Franciscan missionaries in the area by 1566.
James Oglethorpe was given a charter for a colony at Savannah in 1733. The charter specified that the colony was to be named for the King. Thus, the colony, Georgia, last of the original 13, was named for England’s King George II Oglethorpe planned to bring prisoners here to rehabilitate and earn money for the colony. His plans were not completely successful and in 1752, he surrendered power to the British government. The new settlers began to take over the American Indian land and development was encouraged. The Creeks and the Cherokees were relocated beyond the Mississippi River in the saga known as "Trail of Tears."
The Civil War played a large part of Georgia history. The war in Georgia began and ended in Savannah. Georgia was readmitted to the union in 1870 and it was represented in Congress by 1871.

Nicknames:
Georgia is usually known as the “Peach State” because of the many peach trees in the state. It was also called the “Goober State” for the abundance of peanuts and their importance to the state’s economy. Another well-known nickname is “Empire State of the South” given because of the state’s prominence in the southern United States in industry and economic development. Another nickname, “Yankee-land of the South” is about the same as far as the economy goes. Other nicknames were the “Buzzard State” because of the law passed to protect the scavengers as a needed part of the ecology. The “Cracker State” was used in a more negative way referring to the many immigrants from some nearby states

The Great Seal of Georgia
The Seal was adopted by the State Constitution of 1798. There are three pillars supporting an arch, symbolizing the three branches of government. A soldier stands with a drawn sword defending the Constitution, whose principles are wisdom, justice and moderation. The reverse side of the seal has a man plowing and a ship with cotton and tobacco, representing the agriculture and commerce of the motto. In 1914, the date on the seal was changed from 1799 to 1776 to correspond with the date of the Declaration of Independence.
