As Insurance Termination Notices Pile Up, Upton to Introduce Keep Your Health Plan Act

October 28, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) will introduce legislation this evening to protect the many Americans whose health plans are being cancelled because of the health law. Time and again, in selling the health law to the American people, President Obama promised, “If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what.” Unfortunately, many Americans from coast to coast are all too familiar with the consequences of the president’s broken promise, already receiving health plan termination notices in the mail. The Keep Your Health Plan Act will ensure that insurance plans available today in the individual market can continue to exist which would allow Americans who want to keep their current health coverage to do so.

“Despite the president’s repeated promise of ‘if you like your plan, you can keep it,’ many Americans are now learning the sad reality that their current plan will no longer exist beginning on January 1. Instead they are forced to purchase health care that they cannot afford through a system that does not even work, and that’s just not fair,” said Chairman Upton. “This legislation is about providing folks the peace of mind that they will be allowed to keep their current coverage if they so choose.”

The bill would allow health care plans available today on the individual market to continue to be offered so Americans have the option to keep what they have if they like it. The bill also ensures that Americans maintaining their health care plan would not face a penalty under Obamacare.
