Avfuel Corp., a nationwide supplier of aviation fuel, is planning an expansion of its corporate headquarters on Ellsworth Road in Washtenaw County's Pittsfield Township.

Plans submitted to the township call for two additions totaling 14,544 square feet. The existing building, on Ellsworth between State Street and Stone School Road, is 19,803 square feet.

Township planning director Bruce Fowler said the company needs to submit more information to address some issues identified by the planning commission and staff. He said the largest potential issue was that part of the lot is on a flood plain, and so Avfuel would have to make sure the building would not damage it.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality also would have to grant approval.

Other issues include landscaping and barrier-free parking, Fowler said.

He also said the company would need approval from the county drain commission, and from the city of Ann Arbor for a proposed curb cut on Ellsworth.

A call to Avfuel for comment was not immediately returned.

According to its Web site, the company was founded in the early 1970s, and has customers in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and Europe. It claims a 20 percent market share in terms of number of retailers and gallons sold. Customers include airlines, freight and cargo companies, airports and the military.
