Bulgaria pulls weightlifting team from Olympics due to doping

Sofia, Bulgaria (Sports Network) - Bulgaria pulled its weightlifting team out of the upcoming Olympics after 11 athletes withdrew due to doping violations.

Eight men and three women weightlifters tested positive for steroids earlier this month, according to a release on the Bulgarian Olympic Committee Web site.

The men who tested positive were Ivailo Filev, Demir Demirev, Mehmed Fikretov, Ivan Stoitsov, Georgi Markov, Ivan Markov, Alan Tsagaev and Velichko Cholakov. The women were Milka Maneva, Donka Mincheva and Gergana Kirilova.

Cholakov was the bronze medalist in the heavyweight category (above 105 kg) at the 2004 Athens Games.
