    •  I am a 60 year old, disabled, active auto racer, living in Huntsville Alabama. I race in an event called Autocross (SOLO). Autocross, is a time based race that takes place in large parking lots, with courses designated by traffic cones. I found Autocross last year, and it has been a life changing experience. The runs are only 60 seconds, but the excitement of a day out racing with all sorts of sports cars, and competing, lasts for weeks. My participation has given me a "live to race" mindset that is very powerful. It so helped my life, I want to share the experience with teens that would normally not be able to compete in this sport at all; those confined to wheelchairs and needing hand controls to operate a vehicle. I have purchased a 2011 WKA Clone Racing Kart which I have modified with hand controls. Karts are the entry level class for SCCA SOLO racing, and are quick, safe, racing tire equipped machines. These are not GoKarts, they turn times as fast as some cars. I have modified the engine and gears to make it suitable for our type of racing. A run through the course, and around the gates, is like... flying. I have done some testing with adult amputee's, they thought it was amazing fun, but my target group is the chair bound, 12-18 yr olds, which is our Formula Junior class. We have several young teens that race with us every month, those teens have driven it, but I have not been able to test with handicapped teens. I am not sure how to find my candidates, I was working on making the idea possible and overlooked that part I think. Any ideas, comments?

    • Hi, my name is Melissa, I have an 8 year old daughter with myelomenigocel. She has had so many surgeries from the closure of her spine to double hip surgery, bladder and bowl surgery. Also recently she has had 19 shunt revisions since October 2011. That's not counting the ones she had before that. She also has epilepsy due to her chiari malformation. She stays sick. Her life is difficult because of this. Is there any parent who has been through this with there sb child? Does this get better as the child gets older? I know no one can predict ones future. I just wanted to see if anyone else has gone through this. Thanks.

Hello! My name is Laurel and Amanda is my 29 year old daughter, born with spina bifida. We live in southeastern Michigan. This post is an attempt to network with fellow SB famillies and share with you the book "Amanda, Perfectly Made" that I wrote about the last 29 years. It is for you - I know how some of you feel. I have honestly shared the challenges and cheers faced through the years with doctors, surgeries, teachers, family, bowel and bladder issues, shunts, and the faith that held me together while I questioned "why?" The big scary milestone right now is we are finally moving Amanda into her own apartment the first of October. I invite you to read and follow my blog: www.justlaurel.com that will follow the details of moving Amanda out and will let you know a release date as publishing date draws near for my book.
