She's always performing, as she treats each public outing as an opportunity to flex her onstage persona.

But Terry Richardson revealed another side of Lady Gaga as he posted rare candid shots of the star to his website on Wednesday.

The legendary fashion photographer shared revealing snaps of the 27-year-old as she relaxed backstage and even the make-up and wig donning process she undergoes to become the character known as Lady Gaga.

Gaga - whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta - could be seen in a series of black and white stills being transformed into her highly contrived personality.

Seated in a chair, the Poker Face singer is outfitted with a blonde wig as her own auburn locks are tucked into a cap.

She is then teased and prodded and eventually covered over in a thick cake of make-up to complete the mask of Gaga.

But Richardson, 48, also captured other candid moments of the star in rehearsals.

The Applause singer can be seen dressed in simple tights and a loose button down shirt as her natural hair is tied into a messy bun.

Free of the shell of her persona, Gaga looks raw and real as she runs through renditions of her songs while prepping for a live performance.

In another still posted to Richardson's website, the artist is simply seated on a plastic chair as she sips from a juice bottle.

Her legs are criss-crossed as she stares off into space, mirroring another image of the star reclining on the bare floor of her dressing room after an exhausting performance.

But this is not the first time the two have collaborated.

The pair release a photo book together in 2011 called Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson.

And last week the two wrapped the music video for the second single from ARTPOP, Do What U Want.

The venture is a promising one as Terry's directorial talents recently shot Miley Cyrus to over 300million views for her Wrecking Ball video.

Other stills posted by Richardson included shots of the diva going airborne in the Volantis - 'the world's first flying dress.'

Featuring an uber-modern white curvy body mold made of fiber optics, the battery operated high-couture hover vehicle flies through the air through the use of six booms in a hex formation.

TechHaus, the technical branch of the Haus Of Gaga, worked on the invention for over two years.

And Terry's snaps show the star actually hovering above the ground in her flying garment.

I'm curious to see what she will look like when she is old (if she makes it there) ... she will have very weak ankles from all these years in ridiculous heels. What will she do when this fame-bubble bursts and she doesn't have people running around for her 224/7? I imagine a very lonely, weird, 55 year old woman confused about groceries and what to do with them as wont have cooked for herself in years!

I doubt she is THAT out of touch. She comes from a close-knit Italian family. They will be there for her. And I'm sure she has a trainer that works with her legs/ankles to make sure she is properly training her muscles and protecting her bones.

None of the few things she has ever said that was worth any note was that she is not sexy. She is naturally an very plain and ordinary person who can sing a bit!

Lady Gaga or Tony Bennett: which of them is wearing the silliest wig? You decide!

If your job involves smiling for the camera all the time, why would you smile when you are relaxing?

Richardson is so overrated.

I like her. I can sense a decent person, and she strikes me as a decent person. I am sure she has her issues, but she is channelling them in a productive way, and in the process, entertaining those who like her. I find her creative and interesting, unlike most so called artistes today. I would certainly choose her over Miley Cyrus any day.

Just look at her eyes and you can tell she has mental issues. Nobody in their right mind would do what she does. Runs around half naked most of the time and spends fortunes on ungodly outfits...you would wear to a hanging! And she only wears them once. I guess she'll try selling them at auction when people finally get tire of her and her insanity.

Often those with mental issues, as you put it, are some of the most creative and intelligent people out there, so maybe think on that before you judge.

It's stupid how people "diagnose" others with mental disorders while other people are actually disorders. Way to be insensitive.
