Oscar-winner Jean Dujardin announces divorce from wife of four-years Alaxandra Lamy

They were widely perceived as the golden couple of France, but after months of furious speculation  Jean Dujardin has confirmed that his four-year marriage to actresss Alexandra Lamy is over.

The 41-year-old made the admission at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, but insisted allegations regarding his private life were false.

‘It has been eight months that tabloids have been trying to make me out as depressed, an alcoholic, a womaniser… This is no more, or less, than the story of a couple who are separating, like any other couple,’ he said.

The pair enjoyed a long working relationship on the set of French comedy Un Gars, Une Fille before falling in love and marrying in 2009.

Dujardin would also star with his wife in The Players, the 2012 film he co-directed and produced.

Despite being a household name in his native France, Dujardin was unknown to international audiences until he played silent movie actor George Valentin in the Michel Hazanavicius directed film The Artist.

That role saw him scoop the Best Actor gong at the 84th Annual Academy Awards, which he gratefully received after taking to the stage with ‘Uggie’ – his character’s pet dog in the film.

Dujardin also features in two forthcoming  Hollywood productions and he insists he is ‘well and happy’ as he continues to work on both – Martin Scorcese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street and The Monuments Men, directed by George Clooney.

Rumours of a separation began circulating last year when the couple spent Christmas apart, with Dujardin journeying to Saint Barthelemy while Alexandra went on a skiing holiday with Chloe Jouannet - her daughter from a previous relationship.

The actor was also romantically linked to French star Elsa Zylberstein, an allegation that was later dismissed as ‘ludicrous’ and ‘false.’

A holiday in the South of France over the summer also raised eyebrows when the actor spent much of his time in Corsica while Alexandra stayed in Cevannes, where the Lamy family own property.

It’s understood that Alexandra prompted the split by requesting a divorce.

Top lad. He deserves a younger woman who is a real A-lister. Life is too short to remain in a dead marriage.

God knows what pain she has had to endure. I wish I could counsel her but it wouldn't help as loss is loss. I've been there too. He has a younger model in the wings who will understand his fragility. Strong women can never last with fragile men.
