That's a wrap

What a contrast to this time a month ago when England were celebrating a 2-0 win over Poland that secured their World Cup place.

The good news for England and Roy Hodgson is that they'll have a change to bounce back when Germany come to town on Tuesday.

That's all from me for now. I'll leave you with our match report from Wembley tonight, available HERE.

21:56
From OptaJoe on Twitter

2 - The last team to beat England by a 2+ goal margin at Wembley were then-World Cup champions France in February 1999. Contenders?

21:54
Full-time: England 0-2 Chile

Dull, dire, flat, poor, miserable - take your pick.

It's not the kind of evening Hodgson or the England fans had in mind as boos ring around Wembley, or what's left of it.

This was supposed to be a celebration and an audition for places on the plane to Rio.

Let's hope for better against Germany on Tuesday... a lot better.

21:52
GOAL! England 0-2 CHILE (Sanchez)

A touch of class from Sanchez to round off an excellent evening for Chile, and a miserable one for England.

The Barcelona man was clean through and finished off with a beautiful chip as Forster went to ground.

2-0 doesn't flatter Chile at all.

21:48
Five added minutes

As we head into five minutes of injury time, what does this performance mean for Chile? Are they genuine contenders to win the World Cup on South American soil?

Jeff Powell writes: We also learned that Alexis Sanchez is a 2014 World Cup star in the making. Which is more than can be said of any Englishman on the basis of this performance, Super Wayne included.

After a night like this all that’s left is to hope they’re saving themselves for Germany. Otherwise next Tuesday could be really embarrassing.

Elusive: Alexis Sanchez turns away from danger as he is chased by Leighton Baines
21:43

Martha Kelner's attention has been diverted away from the pitch.

Been forced to look away from the pitch for some entertainment. Found it in a shirtless and generously proportioned gentleman in the stands near the corner flag. He's been stood up the entire time since I first clocked him 20 minutes ago.

21:42

Laura Williamson sums up the mood around Wembley with six minutes to play.

A steady stream of fans starting to leave Wembley with 10 minutes to go. It’s been that kind of night.

21:41

Beausejour replaced by Fuenzalida for Chile.

Sportsmail's Sami Mokbel writes: Can only admire the way Chile play. Pass, move, pass, move. England should be aspiring to something similar. This has been a good test for Hodgson's side. This is how the best international sides play, keeping the ball.

Fiesty: Jack Wilshere clashes with Chile's Jean Beausejour
21:38
From Sportsmail's Jeff Powell at Wembley

So now there are more subs on the pitch than under the Baltic sea…..but unfortunately not as high powered as Russia’s nuclear variety.

This navel-gazing exercise is petering out into something even more meaningless than your average friendly.

Even if England rescue this increasingly embarrassing cause, Chile will be able to say that they won the hour and more that mattered.

21:36

That's the end of the road for Lallana as well as Barkley replaces him.

It's been poor from England tonight to say the least. Not the kind of World Cup celebration party the fans had in mind when they came to Wembley tonight.

In fact, it's the Chile fans who are enjoying themselves, as Neil Ashton reports. Chile fans chanting Ole at Wembley every time their players touch the ball. It’s been that kind of night, England outclassed in their own stadium.

Charles Sale adds: Hard to recognise a single positive that Roy Hodgson has gained from this dreadful game, but a good match to miss for Joe Hart, Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard.

21:31

These friendlies always become disjointed and scrappy with all the changes. There has been little action to report recently as a result of all the subs but we still have 20 minutes to play.

Munoz replaces Vargas. meanwhile, for Chile.

Sportsmail's Laurie Whitwell writes: This has been a rather fiesty friendly. Not only have there been the full-blooded tackles of a competitive match but Jack Wilshere is seriously pumped up. At one point he pushed referee Florian Meyer when he was backpeddling and just now got into a bit of scrap with Jean Beausejour. Not to mention Gonzalo Jara's headbutt into Chris Smalling's chest that oddly resulted in a booking for each.

Well played: Roy Hodgson shakes hands with Jay Rodriguez after taking him off
21:29

Two more changes for England. Cleverley and Henderson come on for Lampard and Wilshere.

Meanwhile, a reflective Jeff Powell writes: More importantly than the substitutions, what are we learning here?

That Southampton is a long way from Sao Paolo. That small South Americans still tend to be more skilful than many a strapping Englishman.

That if Jagielka is the answer then we don’t like the question. And that England’s fans are right not to get too carried away about England’s World Cup chances.

21:24

Defoe on for Milner much to the delight of the Wembley crowd, which includes Sportsmail's Lee Clayton.

'Roy's Boys Ready To Take On The World', says the Mars advert around the pitch. What, at tiddlywinks? Defoe on. He might get a chance. He might.

Chest control: Jack Wilshere holds onto the ball under pressure from Marcelo Diaz
21:21

England already look more lively with Townsend's introduction.

It's brought a slight reshuffle for England, as Rob Draper writes: Lallana switches to the left with Townsend on the right. Looks like Wilshere is a bit more advanced, to get closer to Rooney.

21:19

It's that stage of an international friendly that really annoys me. More changes, this time for Chile as Jara is the next to be introduced in place of Isla.

On the subject of England's changes a moment ago, Jeff Powell writes: Well now, Roy, For the momentary expedience of saving face it makes sense to launch Townsend. But why not send on Defoe at centre-forward and let Rooney roam the way he likes?

21:15

Hodgson has given his players 10 minutes after half-time to try and turn this around, but it is now time for change.

Andros Townsend replaces Jay Rodriguez and comes Chris Smalling on for Phil Jones.

Rob Draper adds: Huge cheer goes up as Townsend comes on. It will at least enliven a flat night at Wembley. Jay Rodgriguez comes off – and in truth he looked out of his depth there. You hope he gets another chance

Outnumbered: Adam Lallana vies with Chile's midfielder Matias Fernandez
21:12

It's been a purposeful start to the second half from England as they look for an equaliser. I say purposeful because there haven't been any clear chances as of yet, just a couple of dangerous crosses into the Chile penalty area.

Rob Draper adds: It hasn’t been a great night for reserves – but Adam Lallana is doing enough to warrant another chance. There’s a confidence about him. There have also been mistakes but he’s demanding the ball, looking composed amongst his peers.

21:08
From Sportsmail's Charles Sale at Wembley

Plenty of empty seats in the corporate ring after half-time. The prawn sandwich brigade in no hurry to watch the second half of this poor England performance.

21:05

It's Carmona on for Aranguiz and Gutierrez on for Fernandez in the two Chile changes.

21:04

Second half underway at Wembley, but no changes for England as of yet.

Chile make two subs, though. I'll confirm those in a moment.

Furious: A far from happy England manager Roy Hodgson on the touchline
21:01
From Sportsmail's Jeff Powell at Wembley

English defenders have a preference for lining up square across the pitch but for periods here this flat pack looked as if it had come from the Ikea warehouse, not the training ground.

Friendly matches like this yield most benefit if they ease fresh young talent into the fold.
But Southampton’s brat pack found themselves lost in the midst of a shambles.

With a name like Rodriguez, one of them might have been playing for Chile and there were times it looked like he was. Then his pal Lallana made a mish-mash of an easy chance.

Presumably Rooney or someone in a white shirt is going to come thundering to the rescue. But at half it is not only the kids who must do better.

20:48

Plenty of options on the bench for Hodgson should he want to change things.

Rob Draper is calling for the introduction of Andros Townsend.

That was rather flat and uninspiring. The euphoria of Poland seems somewhat distant. Only a friendly, but thus far the reserve players are not making a strong case for themselves. Townsend an obvious early entrant for the second half – to lift the crowd, if nothing else.

Effort: Adam Lallana drags his shot wide of the far post just before half-time
20:47
Half-time: England 0-1 Chile

One minute of first-half added time comes and goes and that's the end of the first half.

It's been a good 45 minutes for Chile so far, but a reality check for Hodgson and Co amid the World Cup euphoria.

Charles Sale writes: Hodgson has to make changes at half-time after such a disjointed first half by England.

20:45

A first real sight of goal for England set up by Wilshere's excellent ball to Rooney.

The Manchester United forward then slid in Lallana, but his right-foot shot was dragged wide of the far post, albeit with a deflection.

That ball from Wilshere really made that chance. The Arsenal midfielder has been fairly quiet in the first half so far. Meanwhile, after a heavy challenge, Lee Clayton asks the question: Why does it always seem that Jack Wilshere is one tackle away from a limp?

20:40

England's best chances have come from set pieces in the first half, and Jones almost prodded in from a corner, but his shot went wide of the far post.

It's been frustrating for Rooney so far, as Sportsmail's Charles Sale reports.

Wayne Rooney becoming increasingly frustrated. This is when he tends to do something stupid.

Aerial battle: Phil Jones rises high to head the ball
20:36

Hodgson's mood doesn't seem to have improved much as England continue to struggle.

Matt Barlow writes: After spending ages on his feet imploring his team to squeeze up behind the front three, Roy Hodgson seems to have given up and gone for a sit down. Ray Lewington on his feet now but they will not be happy with what they have seen, even taking into account the unfamiliarity within the team. It is not a night when you can rule yourself into the World Cup but one or two might be ruling themselves out.

20:34

Once again the accurate passing from Chile cuts through England and Forster did well to force Beausejour wide. The winger was then forced to cross, but Sanchez's shot was blocked.

Jeff Powell writes: Chile again sliced through the men in front of him so Forster had to come out and do some orthodox defending to prevent concern growing into a crisis.

Yet this was not far from being England’s projected World Cup defence for Brazil next summer.

Ho hum……

It looks very dysfunctional for England at the moment with so many players not on the same wavelength.

Rob Draper adds: Wayne Rooney is dropping into midfield to bellow instructions – presumably about the distribution from the back. His frustration is evident.

Animated: England manager Roy Hodgson shouts from the technical area
20:32
From Sportsmail's Jeff Powell at Wembley

Frank Lampard, captain on this night of his golden 100th England cap, had gone into the match staunchly defending his club-mate Cole. But when it came to curbing his own attacking instincts, more than one of Hodgson’s back four needed some protection.

Johnson was left trailing on the right flank as Chile threatened a second. And not for the first time the centre of England’s defence looked vulnerable against pace.

Yes,chances went begging at the other end but Chile’s ecstatic reaction to going in front had provided a barometer as to their limited expectations.

20:31
From Sportsmail's Sami Mokbel at Wembley

Roy's looking agitated down in his technical area. Rightly so, because his experimental side haven't really got going here. Rodriguez and Lallana have done okay, without setting Wembley alight on their England debuts. Still time to impress, though.

20:27

More encouragement for England as Wilshere stings Bravo's palms with a venomous effort from long range.

Rod Draper adds: I don’t think there’s much doubt that England will score tonight. They look lively enough. However, defensively they look very vulnerable. There is a need for some authority back there.

20:23

England up the tempo and have two good efforts at goal from distance.

First, Lampard's free-kick was deflected before being pushed away by the goalkeeper and then Milner tried his luck from 20 yards out, which deflected onto the roof of the net.

Hodgson is rather animated in the techincal area at the momemt.

Battle: Eugenio Mena shields the ball under pressure from Glen Johnson
20:21

Sportsmail's Jeff Powell, meanwhile, is focused on the starting left-back spot and he hasn't been impressed with Baines so far.

Leighton Baines, who began this season touted as the second best left back in the world being touted on these shores as the second best left back in the world behind Ashley Cole, suffered a sharp dip in those rankings.

First Baines was outpaced for the cross which gave new England keeper Fraser Forster his first harum-scarum moment.

Then he was caught sleeping on his feet as Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez headed Chile into an unlikely lead.

Sometimes in this game, it can go better for you when you are not playing. Not that Cole was letting on, of course.

20:19

Above all for England, this game is a bit of an audition for places in England's World Cup squad.

Sportsmail's Laura Williamson is keeping an eye on the battle at right-back.

Kyle Walker’s place in this England team is looking more assured by the second, given the start Glen Johnson has made. He was slow to close down his man in the lead up to Chile’s opener and was nowhere to be seen when the visitors broke through Jean Beausejour minutes ago. To be fair, however, he’s not the only member of this back four who looks half asleep…

Lead: Sanchez got in front of Leighton Baines before heading past Fraser Forster into the bottom corner
Delight: Sanchez celebrates his opening goal at Wembley
20:17

Lallana looks to have settled quite well to international life so far.

Lee Clayton writes: Lallana has a little bit of swagger about him that you need at international level. He looks at home in an England shirt, even in the early stages.

20:14

Chile look slick in their passing so far, and Sanchez laid a lovely pass on for Beausejour who fired in a left-foot shot at goal.

Forster got a strong hand to the ball and fisted it away. A good confidence boost for the England goalkeeper but threatening from the visitors.

20:13

Good response from England as Lallana fires in a low shot which needed saving.

Back to Chile's goal, and Baines probably should have done better with his marking.

Rob Draper writes: For all the praise Leighton Baines has received of late, he cannot allow Alexis Sanchez to get across him and head that in. That said, great movement and link-up from the Barcelona striker.

20:07
GOAL! England 0-1 CHILE (Sanchez)

It's the Barcelona man who gives Chile an early lead at Wembley.

England had looked sharp until that stage but a good breakaway from the visitors resulted in Sanchez getting in front of Baines and heading into the bottom corner past Forster.

Clinical finish from a man who's been in excellent form of late.

Chile lead.

Opener: Alexis Sanchez celebrates after giving Chile an early lead at Wembley
20:05

How did that not go in?

Milner found an acre of space on the right and whipped in a low cross which cannoned into Gonzalez and left Bravo scrambling.

Bright start from England.

20:04

First chance for England as Cahill and Jones compete to get on the end of a free-kick. It looked like Jones got the final touch and his header forced a rather theatrical save from Bravo.

There's a decent atmosphere at Wembley given the fairly low attendance. Sportsmail's Neil Ashton writes:

Always feel uncomfortable when the national stadium is half full. One entire tier is out of bounds tonight, it’s opposite the Royal Box and looks so bare.

Centurion: Frank Lampard is presented with a golden cap to mark his 100 appearances for England
20:00

Anthems complete and we're ready to kick-off at Wembley.

The visitors get the ball rolling... sit back and enjoy.

19:55

Lampard receives his golden cap and is given a generous cheer bu the Wembley crowd.

It's now time for the anthems.

Martha Kelner, meanwhile, has been doing some research on the referee.

Florian Meyer on refereeing duty today. He's one letter short of being the 40th ranked tennis player in the world.

19:53

The players have just made their way onto the pitch.

Lampard leads out England... this is an excellent honour for him and one he deserves.

Unlike the packed out qualifier against Poland last month, there are quite a few empty seats at Wembley tonight. A large section of the top tier is closed off.

19:45

Southampton's excellent start to the season has been recognised in the form of debuts for Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez. Sadly for the Saints, Rickie Lambert is out injured, otherwise it would have been a hat-trick.

A few moments ago, Roy Hodgson told ITV: 'Tonight is an ideal opportunity for them. I want to see what I've seen from them in the Premier League matches.'

Debutant: Jay Rodriguez (centre) warms up with his England team-mates
Partisan: Chile fans make their way towards Wembley Stadium
19:34
Spot the trend...

Matt Barlow's research continues. Have a look at this stat about England No 9 debutants.

England v Chile 1989: No 9 Nigel Clough winning his first cap.
England v Chile 1998: No 9 Dion Dublin winning his first cap.
England v Chile 2013: No 9 Adam Lallana winning his first cap.

19:30
TEAM NEWS

Here's the Chile line-up for tonight.

Chile: Bravo, Mena, Gonzalez, Isla, Fernandez, Beausejour, Medel, Aranguiz, Diaz, Alexis, Vargas.

Subs: Toselli, Silva, Carmona, Gutierrez, Valdivia, Rojas, Munoz, Jara, Fernandes,
Fuenzalida, Herrera.

19:28
Frank Lampard - centurion

Frank Lampard has now passed 100 appearances for England and there will be a cap presentation just before kick-off to mark Lampard's milestone. The cap will be presented by Lampard Snr.

Sportsmail's Lee Clayton writes:

Lovely gesture by the FA to have Frank Lampard presenting his son with his golden caps to celebrate 100 caps. I'm here with my dad. He once gave me a certificate for swimming.

Golden: The 100th England cap won by Frank Lampard is displayed at Wembley
19:24

It's a big night for Fraser Forster as he makes his England debut. Forster has impressed with his form for Celtic, especially in the Champions League. Hart is on the bench, somewhere he's been a lot recently for Manchester City.

Sportsmail's Lee Clayton is looking forward to seeing Forster play tonight.

Groans from the posh sheets with the naming of James Milner in the England team. What can you learn from playing him is the debate? Good luck to the three debutants. I'm especially interested to see Fraser Forster in action. Southampton are a breath of fresh air, now can their duo make the same impact as Rickie Lambert?

Stoppers: England goalkeepers Fraser Forster (left) and Joe Hart warm up
19:17

As both sets of players arrive at Wembley, here are some programme notes from Roy Hodgson courtesy of Sportsmail's Laurie Whitwell.

Roy Hodgson is speaking with pride in the match programme on England making Brazil next year, as he is quite entitled to.

But his point about goals scored overlooks a certain something.

'I don't think there were many teams who scored more than 31, so we're really happy,' he says.

To be frank, there weren't many teams who faced San Marino and Moldova home and away either.

Hodgson also dangles a carrot for any player still not granted a senior cap.

He says: 'Keep playing for your club, be aware that you are being watched every week by an FA scout. Quite often Ray Lewington, Gary Neville or myself. There won't be any potential players between now and the selection in May that is three won't have seen on numerous occasions.'

Gary Cahill and Daniel Sturridge of England arrive at Wembley
Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Leighton Baines make their way into the stadium
Skipper: Frank Lampard will captain England after passing 100 appearances
Opposition: The Chile team arrive at Wembley ahead of kick-off
Walk: England manager Roy Hodgson and coach Gary Neville on the pitch
19:02

While the World Cup play-offs are in progress elsewhere across the continent, England are safe in the knowledge that their place in Brazil is already secure.

As for their opponents tonight, Chile will also be attending the party after finishing third in the South American qualifying section.

Matt Barlow is in place at Wembley, and he's been digging through the history books.

Plenty of room for improvement for England against Chile tonight. No England player has scored against them since 1953, when Tommy Taylor and Nat Lofthouse struck in a 2-1 win in Santiago, a week before the Queen was crowned, and Roy Hodgson has been talking them up. "We've studied them and been unbelievably impressed by them, we think they are a very, very good side," said Hodgson, the programme. "They will offer a big surprise to people who don't know a lot about them or South American football."

18:53
TEAM NEWS

Just as expected for England.

Forster starts in goal with Hart on the bench. Southampton duo Lallana and Rodriguez also make their England debuts.

The centurion Frank Lampard captains the team.

England: Forster, Johnson, Baines, Milner, Cahill, Jones, Wilshere, Lampard (c), Lallana, Rooney, Rodriguez

Subs: Smalling, Ruddy, Cole, Gibbs, Jagielka, Barkley, Cleverley, Henderson, Townsend, Defoe, Hart.

Road to Rio

Exactly one month ago the nation held it's collective breath as England prepared to take on Poland in a must-win encounter.

It was a tense evening at Wembley, but goals from Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard sealed a 2-0 win and secured England's place at the World Cup next year.

Now, with a trip to Rio awaiting next summer, Roy Hodgson's will begin his preparations for Brazil with an international double-header against Chile tonight and Germany on Tuesday.

Kick-off at Wembley is at 8pm, so in the meantime why not get in touch with your thoughts.

We won! England put on a great fight, just as expected. Please don't be so negative about your team just beacuse you lost today, I'm sure you I'll do much better on the future. You guys have a pretty young and promising team, give the lads some time and you I'll be amazed. We had a dark period before this great generation of footballers, so I know how you probably feel right now. Grettings from Chile and good luck inn the future.

England manager Roy Hodgson: "The experimenting does not totally explain the result. We played against a very good team and from a goal down it was always going to be difficult. We came back into the game well but Chile knew how to take the sting out of the game. There were a lot of stoppages and to be frank Chile were the better team. "We were unlucky to lose by two goals when pushing forward but we learned a lot tonight about our squad of players and what it's like to play against South American opposition." Was Woy at the game tonite? Where was his mind wandering?

Hopefully the clamour for getting as much "yoof" in the side as possible takes a reality check. It's all very well saying get rid of the likes of Cole, Gerrard, Carrick, even an off-form Lampard etc. but when it comes to the big tournament you need your experience and top class players in there, who have won things. Yeah its great blooding the youngsters, but going into the WC with a midfield potentially of Jones, Lallana, Wilshere or Barkley midfield is asking for trouble. The obsession with eradicating all traces "golden generation" on the basis they didn't win anything and the mentality of "blood the youth" at all costs is misguided. Cole, Carrick & Gerrard all show they are still a better option than inexperienced (but talented) youngsters.
