Denise Richards claimed that Charlie Sheen's sons Max and Bob were having 'violent outbursts'.

So a pretend stick fight was an interesting choice of activity by their mother Brooke Mueller, who took them out to play on a Los Angeles hiking trail on Friday following months of separation from them on account of losing custody.

The troubled 36-year-old is clearly enjoying the privileges that come with having her sibling - Scott Mueller - as the new temporary legal guardian of her four-year-old boys.

She was seen holding a large stick up high in the air as if it were a sword, whooping with delight, and later attempting to break the sticks as the three of them carried around a large tree branch each.

Brooke sported baggy grey joggers and a loose fitting black long sleeve top as she carried a walking stick.

And her two boys were similarly outfitted with tree branches as they dutifully followed their mother through a field of dry scrub.

Both boys sported graphic T-shirts as they double fisted makeshift canes for the leisurely jaunt.

The hike was surely a welcome occasion for Mueller who has been fighting to win full custody of Bob and Max after her 21st stint in rehab.

Meanwhile, new details have emerged regarding her pregnancy with the twins four years ago.

Brooke gave birth to twins Bob and Max, her sons with former husband Charlie Sheen, seven weeks early but allegedly didn’t tell her medical team that she had sought treatment for her addiction to crystal methamphetamine, reports RadarOnline.

According to RadarOnline Charlie, 48, knew but didn’t inform anyone because he ‘was very protective of Brooke, and didn’t say anything because they both had a real fear that the boys would be taken away from them and placed in foster care’.

According to the website: ‘Brooke didn’t tell her obstetrician that she had been to rehab twice while pregnant… Not one member on her labour and delivery team knew she had been using crystal meth during most of her pregnancy.

‘Brooke was extremely afraid of being criminally charged with child endangerment because of her drug use while pregnant, so nothing was said to anyone.’

However, the source admitted Charlie – who divorced Brooke in 2011 and is currently embroiled in a bitter custody war with her over the twins – now realises he made a terrible mistake. 

The insider said: ‘Charlie now recognises that was a catastrophic mistake for several reasons.

Perhaps if the boys had been taken away, that might have scared Brooke enough to get sober once and for all.

After Brooke was admitted to rehab for the 21st time earlier this year, Charlie’s other former wife Denise Richards, 42, took them in.

She cared for Bob and Max until earlier this month when she made the heartbreaking decision to give up her temporary custody. 

In a letter to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, Denise revealed she feared for the safety of her daughters Sam, Lola and Eloise along with the family dogs because of the twins’ ‘violent outbursts’.

Brooke’s brother Scott has now been granted temporary custody and he has been praised as a ‘role model’.

A source told E! Online: ‘The boys are doing great. They have never been happier. When the teacher told them last Friday that their uncle was going to be picking them up from school, they were really, really excited. They put their arms in the air. They were full of joy about the decision. They love their uncle.

‘Brooke's brother is a role model for the boys. He has been a stable influence in their life all the way through. He's been there for them since they were born. He has spent weekends with them. They trust him and adore him and he was the perfect person to step in.’

Charlie's representative had no comment when contacted by MailOnline while Brooke's representative has not responded to a request for comment.

It's nice to be able to bring up ones children without having ones every decision reported and commented on by the gutter press. Children should be allowed to play! I'm sure many of you have had stick fights with friends and siblings in your time but no one felt it necessary to pass judgement.

Ridiculous headline. What makes you think it's a "stick fight"? It looks to me like she's finding walking sticks for everyone. Even the man in the suit has one. Been on many hikes and have done the same thing.
