Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's oldest child Maddox looked all grown up as he joined his parents on the red carpet at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science's Governors Awards on Saturday night.

The 12-year-old sported a tuxedo and bow tie like his dad, with his hair smartly combed to the side.

It's a new look for the lad, who is more frequently seen in jeans and T-shirts as you would expect from a boy of his age.

He smiled shyly for photographers in front of proud Angelina, 38, and Brad, 49, before going into the Grand Ballroom at the Hollywood and Highland Center to see his mum receive the prestigious Jean Hersholt Award for humanitarian work and an Oscar statuette.

His hunky dad put a protective hand on his shoulder as he guided him into the venue.

It's been a big year for Maddox, who also made his acting debut playing an uncredited bit role as a zombie in Brad's blockbuster World War Z, which opened in June.

And it's a far cry from what his life would have been as an unwanted baby in Cambodia.

Angelina adopted her first son in 2002 when he was just seven months old from an orphanage in Battambang.

The actress applied for adoption after visiting Cambodia while filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 and, later,  on a field mission for the United Nations' High Commission for Refugees.

But Angelina, who was then married to Billy Bob Thornton, wasn't able to bring the child back to the US until 2003 due to legal issues.

The beautiful brunette finally took custody of Maddox in Namibia, where she was filming Beyond Borders. By then she had split with Billy Bob and raised him as a single mother.

All that changed in 2005 when the actress and Brad fell in love on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the celebrity couple began to grow their family.

Now Maddox has five siblings, Pax, nine; Zahara, eight; Shiloh, seven; and five-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

The children travel with their mum and dad to various filming locations as much as possible and are frequently seen flying into and out of airports around the world, which enables fans to see how the brood is growing up.

And it would seem his parents' thespian nature has rubbed off on Maddox, who has been tipped to land a role in the upcoming Paul Pope-penned Battling Boy.

A source told RadarOnline: 'Maddox would be amazing in the part, but Brad is wary of going all Will Smith with his kids.

'This could be a special case though, because Brad got involved in the project so early that his influence – and Maddox’s - are really felt across the board on this thing. There are panels that even use some signature Maddox facial expressions!'

Angelina has been in Australia directing her second feature film, an adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand's WWII book Unbroken with a script by the Coen Brothers. While Brad has been in England shooting the WWII film Fury with Shia LaBeouf and Scott Eastwood.

But he reportedly flew to Sydney earlier this month to spend time with his family.

Meanwhile, Angelina's next role is Disney's Maleficent - due out May 30 - with Juno Temple, Elle Fanning and Miranda Richardson.

I have to admit - I was very anti Angelina after the split of Brad and Jennifer Aniston - but the Jolie-Pitt clan are amazing - not only do these kids all belong to the same family - there is no distinction between adopted kids and kids by birth. I think Angelina and Brad make truly amazing parents. They are both incredibly talented people giving their kids the very best chance in the world! I can only wish them well!

The differences in Angelina in the top picture and the picture from 2003 with Maddox on her arm are shocking.

You should probably bear in mind that she is ten years older and she has been through major surgery that must have been extremely stressful both physically and psychologically. Apart from that she lives a relatively hectic lifestyle, jetting from country to country with her work and for charity/UN work. Considering all that she looks great!

I don't know why more wealthy people dont adopt children from orphanages if they truly believe that they can give them a better life and put their selfishness to the side..So many children are left orphans following war and poverty and they will never know what it's like to have loving parents It makes me very sad and may God bless Angelina she is a reminder of what is important in life..
