It's a hard life for Rachel McAdams who celebrated her 35th birthday in rather somber fashion,  despite being on the tropical island of Oahu, Hawaii.

The actress spent her special day filming a funeral scene for the as-yet untitled Cameron Crowe movie on Sunday.

The rom-com regular is seen attending a service for Bradley Cooper's character, while actor and comedian Jay Baruchel reads a eulogy.

In the photos, The Notebook star is seen wearing a rather dowdy knee-length navy, wrap dress and flip-flops, while her hair is styled into a simple up do.

The star was spotted in an almost identical outfit in early October, when she was photographed having her make-up reapplied ready for a close-up.

Her outfit was a long way from the summery look she sported earlier this month, while filming alongside The Hangover actor, 38.

The leading lady embraced the Hawaiian culture in a soft pink dress with white hibiscus design that fell just below the knee.

The movie, originally titled Deep Tiki, sees Cooper star as celebrated military contractor Brian Gilcrest, who reconnects with lost love Tracy, played by McAdams, after returning to the site of his 'greatest career triumphs'.

But as with any Hollywood love story, there's another person in the mix - a hard-charging Air Force watchdog assigned to Gilcrest played by Emma Stone, whom he unexpectedly falls for.

The film is also yet to secure a release date, though other big names such as Alec Baldwin and Bill Murray are already tied to the project.

Rachel, whose first breakout role was in 2004's Mean Girls, has been romantically linked to Ryan Gosling, Josh Lucas and Michael Sheen in the past.

She is currently said to be dating Canadian music manager Patrick Sambrook, who appears to be her first romance since her February split from Welsh actor and Masters Of Sex star Sheen after a two-and-a-half-year relationship.
