'I started this whole category of lifestyle': Martha Stewart dismisses homemaking rival Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP

Martha Stewart is the original queen of homemaking -- and don't you forget it.

In an appearance on Bloomberg Television Tuesday, the 72-year-old domestic doyenne spoke frankly about her reign over all things lifestyle, where Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, is proving to be some tough competition with her website GOOP.

'She's a charming, pretty person who has a feeling for lifestyle,' said Ms Stewart. 'She wants to be a lifestyle arbiter. Fine. Good. I think I started this whole category of lifestyle.'

Ms Paltrow's Goop empire, which includes cookbooks, a proposed Goop restaurant, a Goop app, and Goop fashion line with Stella McCartney, is often touted as the 'next Martha Stewart.'

But Ms Stewart herself, still needs some convincing.

'I haven't eaten at Gwyneth's house, and I have never seen how she lives,' she said.

'But, if she's authentic, all the better – and I certainly hope she is. She really wants to be part of the lifestyle business.'

But she does credit the actress with at least some domestic prowess.

'Who are these bloggers? They’re not trained editors at Vogue magazine'

'Gwyneth for example, has a book on the best-seller list. She must be doing something right,' admitted Ms Stewart, who added that she has no qualms about the 30 years she has on Miss Paltrow.

'I don't ever think about how old I am. . .the only time it ever occurs to me is when I say, "Ok, who's going to climb Precipice with me today when I'm in Acadia National Park and only one person raises his hand.

'But that just tells me I need some new friends,' she laughed.

And in the interview with anchor Stephanie Ruhle, Ms Stewart actually lets loose on the younger generation of food and lifestyle bloggers

'Who are these bloggers? They’re not trained editors at Vogue magazine. I mean there are bloggers writing recipes that aren’t tested, that aren’t necessarily very good, or are copies of everything that really good editors have created and done,' she said.

'So bloggers create a kind of popularity, but they are not the experts. And we have to understand that.'

I think there are really two Martha Stewarts, there's Martha the teacher and Martha the businesswoman. Both are very confident and very effective but I think Martha the businesswoman is a person who will cut you to the bone if she can make a buck selling them, your bones that is... She's right when she says she invented the whole concept of lifestyle and she continues to be very good at presenting her lifestyle. She's seen other arbiters of style come and go, few of them have attained her level of success and influence. On the other hand, her lifestyle is decidedly decadent and self centered. If someone came along and offered something refreshingly different but still substantial and consistent, someone with flair, beauty and the ability to entertain while instructing, well Martha's position would be seriously threatened. No one stays on top forever, if she doesn't know that by now, she deluding herself. There's something to be said for the person who claws her way up from the bottom.

And guess what, Martha? Nobody really cares! Get lost! As anyone can read a cook book. And there hasn't been a NEW DISH invented from SCRATCH in a hundred years. You simple add something or leave something out. Duh!

Martha has published something like 80 books, and I collect her cookbooks whenever I see them. Martha Stewart Living magazine is always a fun and clever read, with easy and practical projects. On the other hand, Gwyn's recipes, fashion tips and "lifestyle" suggestions are utterly impractical, and filled with exotic pricey ingredients, exorbitantly expensive clothes, and general self-indulgent haughtiness. Martha wins this one for me. PS try her Shrimp Toast recipe.

Regarding Martha's comment that bloggers put out untested recipes that aren't very good....well Martha, I've tried your recipes, and lets just say the pictures of your food are WAY better than how your recipes taste!
