Dazzling beauty: Italian actress Sophia Loren sparkles in silver at Pirelli Calender's 50th anniversary party

She credits her youthful appearance down to a regular diet of spaghetti, but the oldest Pirelli model could have passed for several decades younger at the 50th anniversary of the Pirelli Calender in Milan.

Over six years ago Italian actress Sophia Loren was the oldest model ever to pose for the racy photographic calender aged 72.

The calendar debuted in 1964 as a racy way of promoting Italian tyre maker Pirelli, and has since grown into a fashion institution.

The Italian actress, now 79-years-old, looked stunning in a glittering silver gown in Milan on Thursday evening.

With her brown hair worn over her shoulders in loose curls and clear gold framed glasses, the star added diamond earrings and a necklace to her dazzling outfit.

She looked thrilled and touched to be in the Italian city among a crowd of much-younger models, as she smiled and blew kisses to photographers.

The Oscar-winning star was one of five actresses to appear on the calendar's 33rd edition back in 2007.

She joined Penelope Cruz, Hilary Swank, Naomi Watts and French star Lou Doillon on the iconic calendar which has been published since 1964.

Models and VIPs from all over the world attended the event, including Sudanese model Alex Wek who looked incredible in a floor length canary yellow satin gown.

Czech Republic model Karolína Kurková wore black leather shorts, a tuxedo jacket, white shirt and bow tie.

Other beauties in attendance included 90s supermodel Eva Herzigova, Brazillian model Ana Beatriz Barros and Italian model Bianca Balti as well as editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia Franca Sozzani.

The Pirelli calender isn't actually sold, but is distributed each year by the tyre firm to 40,000 VIPs, which include top customers, politicians and other personalities.

Sophia Loren has a beautiful figure for her age. She has curves unlike the straight up and down models of today.

The face lifts and botox help as does the wig - but the hands give her age away. Yes she should lose the specs. She can afford new lenses implanted - they work wonders for sight. A beautiful lady with all the care and attention - as with favourite Jane Fonda.

Good on the gorgeous Sophia, spaghetti and all. When she modeled was mercifully before Twiggy's time, so food wasn't considered on of those bad four-letter words. How times have changed. Sophia always had a smile. Today's models look almost as happy as if they'd just sat on a tack. Maybe it's time to finally stop listening to plonkers like Herr Lagerfeld and let these girls eat.
