LITTLE MIX
Salute (Syco))
'If you think weÂ’re just pretty things, you couldn't be more wrong,' brag Tulisa's 'little muffinsÂ’ on their second album. Leaning on the know-how of girl-band veterans Nicola Roberts (Girls Aloud) and Shaznay Lewis (All Saints), the X Factor graduates are maturing rather nicely. The title track could do with a stronger tune, but the jittery pop of Nothing Feels Like You is infectious.

JAKE BUGG
Shangri La (Virgin EMI)
Having topped the charts with his gritty debut last year, Jake Bugg has rushed out this sequel with impressive haste. Enlisting American super-producer Rick Rubin, the results are sharp and energetic. The electrified All Your Reasons is a nod to Neil YoungÂ’s Crazy Horse, while Simple Pleasures echoes the Red Hot Chili PeppersÂ’ Californication. But there are tender moments, too, particularly on Pine Trees and Me And You. On this evidence, Bugg, still only 19, is shaping up as one of Robbie WilliamsÂ’s main rivals for the best male singer prize at next yearÂ’s Brits.

GARETH MALONE
Voices (Decca)
The nationÂ’s favourite choirmaster continues his mission to get Britain singing. Made with a fresh cast of young vocalists, this album reveals MaloneÂ’s indie-pop credentials. There are moving choral versions of KeaneÂ’s Hamburg Song and the Fleet FoxesÂ’ White Winter Hymnal, while Lianne La Havas solos on ErasureÂ’s A Little Respect.

BOY GEORGE
This Is What I Do (Very Me)
‘I’ve got my sparkle back,’ sings Boy George on his first album of new songs for 18 years. It’s hard to argue with the Culture Club singer on the evidence of this heartfelt and varied return. His pop-soul voice has acquired a deeper, knowing edge, but the crooner’s touch suits him well.

JAMES ARTHUR
James Arthur (Syco)
Gritty soulster James Arthur is a welcome antidote to the X Factor’s usual parade of boy-bands and divas, and this assured debut confirms the promise shown by last year’s winner. He’s a bluesy belter in the style of Joe Cocker. Stand-out track Roses is a lovely Emeli Sandé heartbreak ballad.

Demon-stration (Parlo-phone)
Having topped the singles charts with Written In The Stars and Pass Out, rapper Tinie Tempah tried making this new album in the States before wisely returning to his South London roots. The result is an articulate mix of quick-fire rapping, clever rhymes and melodramatic balladry.

ELIZA DOOLITTLE
In Your Hands (Parlophone)
Once dubbed ‘the new Lily Allen’, the one-time Eliza Caird returns with a surprisingly mature second album. Recent single Big When I Was Little harks back to the fizz of her self-titled 2011 debut, but the swirling Let It Rain and the sublime No Man Can are more representative of a developing talent, showcasing a sultry voice equally at home on piano-based soul tracks and heartbreak ballads.

PEARL JAM
Lightning Bolt (Monkey Wrench)
Album number 10 finds the Seattle grunge warriors still thundering away like a gang of young punks. Eddie Vedder's gruff vocals might not be to everyone's taste, but the guitars of Mike McCready and Stone Gossard sweep all before them on Getaway and the title track. The softer, reflective numbers are even more impressive, with Sirens and Future Days adding a pleasantly poppy edge to all that hard rocking.

Tribute (Island)
A bequiffed young hunk from the Yorkshire Dales, singer and bandleader John Newman has already topped the singles charts twice and this debut reiterates that his blue-eyed soul voice is up there with the best. Think Justin Timberlake meets Roland Gift of the Fine Young Cannibals. His songs add a modern sheen to the driving beats of northern soul and Sixties R&B.; Love Me Again is one of the tracks of the year.
