He may have retired from the football field, while his wife’s pop career seem like a distant memory.

But downsizing clearly isn’t an option when you are David and Victoria Beckham.

The couple have now splashed out on a palatial £40million London mansion - an inner-city replacement for their sprawling Hertfordshire estate.

The 38-year-old former England football captain and his wife are now said to be spending an extra £5m renovating the four-storey detached period home in west London.

The house will include rooms for hairdressing, manicures and make-up, as well as separate rooms for 39-year-old Victoria’s shoe collection.

Staff and security will have access to a tunnel which will take them unseen to a second property.

The couple have already installed a sound system so that music can be played in every room, and which can be controlled by a phone or computer. They are planning on adding specially designed waterproof plasma TVs in every bathroom.

Their children Brooklyn, 14; Romeo, 11; Cruz, eight; and daughter Harper, two, will take over the second floor of the house which has three bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.

The lower ground floor includes a study, a gym and massage room, three service rooms and a small garden and there is an underground garage where David can keep his fleet of cars.

David and Victoria have reportedly sold their Hertfordshire home, known as Beckingham Palace, for £12million. However, they also own homes in California, Dubai and a £2.6million holiday home in the South of France.

The Beckhams bought the 12-acre estate just three months after their wedding in 1999 for £2.5million.

In 2003, they split their time between Herts and Spain when David left Manchester United to play for Real Madrid. In 2007 they moved again, this time to Beverly Hills when David signed for LA Galaxy.

The family of six have been renting a home in London since their return to London earlier this year.

The clan are now expected to split their time between London and the US, with David and Victoria said to be keen to educate their children in the UK.

Beckham is Britain’s wealthiest sports star, with a fortune of around £165million. Together, he and Victoria are said to be worth £190million.

Accounts for the celebrity couple recently showed that the pair were raking in almost £100,000-a-day last year.

The pair generated £35.1million in 2012, with the former Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer pulling in £15.4million – almost as much as her husband.

It's a mad old world, isn't it? A mediocre (albeit nice) footballer and a singer who was completely unable to sing, end up living beyond the dreams of avarice, whilst everyone else works their fingers to the bone for very little. The maddest bit is that these folk still hold them in high regard. It's a peculiar form of Stockholm Syndrome.

Good luck to them I say....I'd so the same if I had their money and most would do the same as well. Apart from those righteous people who would give it away and live in poverty themselves hahahahaha.....yeah right!!!

I suppose if millions of people are willing to pay a lot of money to watch football, listen to pop music and wear fashionable clothes, the main suppliers of these services are going to get pretty rich. Us ordinary mortals just have to hope those who get to the top of the pyramid spread their wealth around a little....for example, someone will have to do the painting and decorating in that mansion!
