Barker favourite to take over at Portsmouth just hours after being sacked by Crawley

Richie Barker has emerged as the shock frontrunner to take over as Portsmouth manager, just hours after his sacking by League One Crawley.

Sportsmail understands contact has already been made with the 38-year old and that talks have been held over installing him as successor to the axed Guy Whittngham at Fratton Park.

Though Barker paid the price for a run of seven games without a win at Crawley, Pompey chief executive Mark Catlin knows all about his managerial ability from their time together at Bury and sees him as the right choice to revive the south coast club’s faltering fortunes.

The 38-year old launched his managerial career at Gigg Lane and was poached by Crawley in August last year.

He guided them to 10th in League One, but has found goals hard to come by this season, with a 0-0 home draw against Swindon on Tuesday finally exhausting patience in the Crawley boardroom.

He is keen to rebuild his reputation and may well see hauling former FA Cup winners Portsmouth from the depths of League Two as too enticing a challenge to turn down.

Not long ago getting the sack meant you were rubbish at your profession. Nowadays it leads to payouts & more job prospects.
